Job Summary

This role is responsible for supporting mechanical development, qualification, transition to production and sustaining activities across multiple products, systems, or subsystems. The candidate must possess the ability to complete a technical project independently; mentor and coach other engineers; and work cross-functionally to coordinate resolution of technical issues and implementation of technical improvements. In addition, the candidate shall demonstrate consistent good judgement and will be able to effectively communicate with engineering and management stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for participation and leadership on a cross-functional, multi-site development teams that include Systems, Software, Electrical, Hardware, Mechanical, and Specialty Engineers
  • Become knowledgeable of and fully understand the requirements, specifications, and customer's expectations of system or subsystem, and lead a project team to develop designs to best support them.
  • Interact and communicate clearly (written and oral) with technical management, other professionals, technicians, support personnel, program management, and other customers as required to coordinate, recommend, and confer regarding technical activities and progress.
  • Primary design engineering focal point for resolution of design and manufacturing discrepencies.
  • Perform the design, development, modification, analysis, and documentation of various mechanical systems.
  • Evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products or services and investigate solutions to product or process problems.
  • Support design completion, fabrication and modification of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical components, sub-systems and systems which may include Mechanical Analysis, Aerodynamics/Fluids, Thermal, Fluid Systems, Mechanical Packaging, or others.
  • Use computer-aided design tools to create and update integrated 3D CAD/CAM/CAE mechanical modeling and drawing solutions. Creo CAD experience is preferred, additionally experience with Inventor, SolidWorks or NX is relevant.
Secondary Accountabilities
  • Identify engineering process/capability improvement opportunities, be proactive in continuously improving processes and efficiency.
  • Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel, including mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers.
  • Provide labor estimates and schedule input for design assignments.
  • Participate in the preparation of technical proposals.
  • Perform root cause failure analysis.
  • Support and participate in technical engineering activities; attend appropriate engineering, customer, or business meetings.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field and 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Ability to define and complete technical projects independently.
  • Must possess excellent analytical and communication skills, written and oral.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Hands-on mechanical assembly or fabrication experience preferred (professional or hobby).

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

The expected pay scale for this position if based in our Burnsville, MN location is $96,835/year - $150,336/year. Should the level, location, or scope of the position change during the hiring process, the pay scale may be modified accordingly. When extending an offer of employment, Leonardo DRS considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position; any Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, the candidate's relevant work experience, education/training, certifications, and key skills; internal equity; and market and business considerations.
