Position Summary
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Retzky College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice is seeking recruiting for a research scientist in the Department of Pharmacy Practice with Dr. Paola Rosas' laboratory supported by NIH and AHA funding.

Our laboratory aims to understand the relation between heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and metabolic disorders that are more frequently seen in postmenopausal women. We focus on P21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1) regulatory activities and how these activities are governed by estrogens in the heart and the adipose tissue. We have different murine models of heart failure and we use non-invasive and invasive techniques to evaluate cardiac function and metabolism.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assure efficient and effective laboratory operations, availability of required resources, and proper prioritization of projects; regularly review policies and procedures, monitor quality control.
  • Work within interdisciplinary research teams to design assays to support translational research.
  • Plan, design and perform experiments.
  • Monitor research project development on an ongoing basis. Propose and implement changes as needed.
  • Perform literature searches on given topics and keep current with scientific literature.
  • Prepare manuscripts, present research papers at scientific conferences, and write scholarly articles for publication.
  • Identify research opportunities and prepare grant applications to obtain extramural research funding.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. Degree with training in the areas of biology, biomedical sciences or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of postdoctoral research experience. Experience in cardiac physiology and/or metabolism is required.
  • Must possess excellent technical and troubleshooting abilities to ensure critical laboratory equipment performance and assay integrity and the ability to adhere to strict protocols in accordance with standard operating protocols.
  • Knowledge of lab techniques such as echocardiography, pressure - volume measurements, skinned fiber measurements, metabolic phenotyping, biochemistry studies, among others.
  • Good organizational skills and demonstrated excellent attention to details.
  • Experience with Microsoft office software, Prism, ImageLab, PubMed.
  • Must be able to communicate and participate effectively in team settings.

The budgeted salary rate for the position is $65,000 - $85,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
