Overview

Responsible for the direction, supervision and evaluation of nursing care during hours of duty. Has responsibility for activities concerned with assigned personnel, for the evaluation of patient care, for equipment and supplies, and interdepartmental relations.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Essential Functions
    • 1.1. Assumes responsibility for the operational needs of the nursing division and for the nursing care delivered during the assigned shift
    • 1.2. Collaborates with the nurse manager to a service that is consistent with the patient care beliefs and shared management philosophy of the department.
    • 1.3. Assists the nurse manager to monitor/maintain unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting and Hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
    • 1.4. In collaboration with the nurse manager, is responsible for effective and efficient fiscal management of department operations to ensure proper utilization of organizational and financial resources.
  • 2. Essential Functions (continued)
    • 2.1. Consults with patients/families through primary nurse request, direct family request, and/or direct assessment of patient/family response to hospitalization.
    • 2.2. Adheres to The Westerly Hospital policies and procedures
    • 2.3. Adheres to the hospitals exposure control plans/blood- borne and airborne pathogens
    • 2.4. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department to provide quality patient care.
  • 3. Staff/Self Development
    • 3.1. Acts as a clinical resource and role model
    • 3.2. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to safety of the organization and specific job related hazards.
    • 3.3. Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking e-mails, and department posting.
    • 3.4. Actively participates in training and educational activities for one's own development.

  • 5. Customer Service

    • 5.2. Responds to customer?s issues/requests in a clear concise and timely manner utilizing active listening skills and validating information.
    • 5.3. Promotes positive intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships
    • 5.4. Maintains confidentiality with respect to patient, co-worker and hospital information by disclosing information only on a "need to know basis" and discussing information in appropriate areas.

    • 6.2. Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to adapt to organizational and departmental needs.

  • 7. Resource Utilization
    • 7.1. Reports to work on time, prepared to work and follow hospital policies for notice of lateness/absenteeism and time off requests.
    • 7.2. Prioritizes responsibilities appropriately and completes tasks within assigned time frames. Readily accepts assignments.
    • 7.3. Uses and respects resources as if it were their own. Exercises good judgment in supply usage.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

BS preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Five years recent clinical experience in relevant area of nursing practice. Previous nursing management experience preferred. Demonstrated leadership ability and potential managerial competency. Evidence of this includes, but is not limited to, effective communication skills, ability to deal well with people, to problem solve, to confront/resolve issues, to motivate others, to plan, organize, and direct the activities of others.

LICENSURE

Current registration as RN in the state of Rhode Island. BLS, PALS, ACLS.
