Under the direction of the Radiology management staff and in coordination with the Radiologist, the Computed Tomography Technologist provides care to patients for the purpose of diagnosis and/or treatment of anatomic and physiologic disorders. Responsible for providing timely and effective services to the customers of the Radiology Department, assuring the professional and technical process is carried out.

Responsibilities

Clinical/Patient Support

  • Performs quality diagnostic procedures, general as well as surgical, portable, and tomography. Is proficient in CT. Provides and uses radiation protection devices and techniques in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
  • Maintains radiographic quality. Ensures accurate patient positioning and technique manipulations, making minimal errors and completing tasks promptly.
  • Correctly documents required information in the computerized information system (RIS). Exams are completed in a timely fashion and are recorded. Records are complete, accurate, and up to date.
  • Assists radiologists and/or physicians in specific procedures, patient care, and other duties as required. Assists radiologists and/or physicians in the administration of contrast media and other medications as required. Willingly and cheerfully assists others as needed; misadministration of drugs and contrasts do not occur.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Collaborating with the director, effectively resolves complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises.
  • Coordinates rooms/schedules/staffing to complement patient care needs. Assists with staffing needs and work schedules. Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
  • Directs, coordinates and delegates patient care in an organized manner, allowing for flexibility.
  • Directs patient flow as to specific room and time. Patients are not delayed unnecessarily for radiology services and do not wait longer than 15 minutes without explanation of delays.
  • Applies knowledge and application of nursing procedures pertinent to patient care while in radiology.
  • Maintains communications with Nursing Services concerning patient condition and radiographic procedural changes.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
  • Transports patients when necessary. Patients are not unnecessarily delayed for scheduled tests. Displays team attitude in assisting transportation staff.
  • All images are properly identified with patient I.D., side markers, and tech initials. Patients and others are not subjected to unneeded amounts of radiation. No accidents occur to patients, personnel, or equipment as a result of regulation or policy violations. Patient injuries are reported immediately per hospital policy.
  • Checks to make sure preauthorization is present when needed.
  • Applies knowledge of operation and use of diagnostic x-ray machines, processors, and other required equipment and maintains safety. Tests conducted using equipment are done correctly and produce accurate results; optimum processing is maintained at all times; malfunctions are reported immediately.

Department Support

  • Helps with staff education/in-services/specialized skilled training programs. Assists in the hiring and orientation program of newly hired staff.
  • Promotes personal and professional growth among coworkers.
  • Creates an environment that promotes staff empowerment. Displays creativity and innovation when making recommendations for improvement in the delivery of services to the hospital. Instructs and helps lead the staff so that a high level of productivity is maintained, intervening when necessary, to problem solve.
  • Performs appropriate quantity of work. Consistently productive and volunteers to take on additional work when finished with assigned tasks. Rotates shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the department.
  • Instructs, guides, directs, assists, supervises, and evaluates students in specific clinical and didactic aspects of their education in a caring manner. Information presented is accurate and organized; students understand designated procedures; associate relates well to students and responds to students' needs for information and assistance.
  • Cleans departmental equipment and instruments. Equipment is clean, orderly, and ready for use; all safety/health regulations and procedures are met.
  • Assists with evaluating and guiding coworkers with appropriate input of job performance. Provides immediate feedback (positive and negative) about job performance to personnel on team. Provides input to director on performance evaluations.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of high quality, cost effective services consistent with the needs of the users and the hospital's budgetary guidelines. Assists in identifying and explaining key variances. May act as an interdepartmental liaison promoting effective multidisciplinary teamwork. Identifies and implements cost saving ideas.

Education:

Associates of Applied Science - Radiologic Technology Program

Bachelor's Degree

Experience:

3 years of prior CT experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current, unexpired Iowa Radiologic Technologist license

Current certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a Radiologic Technologist.

BLS within 3 months of hire.

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Current certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a Computed Tomography Technologist.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Organizational, verbal, interpersonal/communication skills, customer relations, analytical, comprehend written directions, follow verbal instructions.

Must be able to read and write English fluently.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

  • Shift: 12 hour shifts: 9:00 am -9:00 pm, for 72 hours per pay period. There is a holiday and weekend rotation, plus on-call.;
