Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to meet the department's responsibility of providing safe and ecient movement through Transit operations on and off campus. - California Class B Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brakes Endorsements
- Meets Standards in 49 CFR 391.41 and hold a non-restricted Commercial Driver's Medical Certificate (DL-51) and maintain continue throughout employment. Proof of certificate must be provided before hire date
- A good driving record during the three (3) year period preceding the application for employment and through the date of appointment, meeting the following requirements: No moving violations; No accidents where applicant contributed to the cause; Has not had driving privilege suspended, revoked, or placed on probation by the Department of Motor Vehicles for a cause involving the safe operation of a motor vehicle; No convictions of California State Vehicle Code Section 20001 (leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury or death; Sections 23103 through 23109 (reckless driving); or Sections 23152 - 23153 (driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs); Other violations and/or accidents will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may be cause for non-selection
- 2 years experience operating a commercial vehicle while holding a California Class B license with both passenger and air brake endorsement.
- Ability to operate a variety of vehicles, from small buses up to 40-foot sized, in the Med-Transit eet without physical limitations.
- Knowledge of: trac laws, regulations, and procedures (including the rules of the road, right of way, etc); departmental rules and regulations; how to safely operate various transit vehicles; procedures used to secure various transit vehicles.
- Skill in: safely driving various transit vehicles in heavy trac and under various environmental conditions (such as rain, nightfall, and fog); using mirrors to view objects behind and to the sides of the driver; operating wheelchair lift platforms.
- Knowledge of commercial vehicle inspection, including air brake systems, and pre-trip documentation.
- Ability to fuel vehicles of all sizes using diesel, unleaded gas, and compressed natural gas fuels.
- Reading skills to understand and apply policies and procedures and other communication, printed and handwritten in English writing skills to legibly and clearly convey information in English.
- Skills in oral communication sucient to convey clear and concise information to the public and staff and to respond to questions without confusion or rambling.
- Effectively communicate with passengers, including interacting with irate and agitated people; effectively communicate and interact with Supervisors, co-workers, Central Control, UCDH ocials, and emergency personnel.
- Ability to accept and follow written and oral instructions from a variety of individuals and the capacity for long term memory of such instructions.
- Ability to work with a diverse staff of patients, staff, faculty, and the public. Patience to communicate with individuals who have limited English speaking skills.
- Ability to read and understand written materials (such as training materials, departmental rules, DMV Handbook, etc.); follow written driving directions (such as Route Sheets); accurately complete departmental forms and reports; read maps; read, interpret, and respond to trac signs and signals; perform basic mathematical computations (including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division); read and interpret mathematical information from tables and charts (such as time schedules).
- Ability to demonstrate patience, tact, courtesy, and empathy with others (e.g., grieving, angry, anxious, or upset patients, family and visitors, etc.)
- Ability to listen attentively to problems or complaints and to refer problems to the appropriate source.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to the vehicles operated.
- Possess basic mechanical aptitude to perform routine vehicle diagnosis.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Must be able to operate a bus for several consecutive hours without fatigue or relief.
- Ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of California Vehicle Code 21113a and UCD Traffic and Parking code.
- Thorough knowledge of all hospital streets and parking areas and the various parking instructions and exceptions as they apply to staff, patients and visitors.
- Ability to use personal computer and generate reports.
- Troubleshooting skills to repair or communicate with individuals assigned to service equipment. Ability to operate a variety of power and hand tools.
- Skill to read and interpret mechanical drafting plans, blue prints, electrical schematics, and technical instruction manuals.

Department Overview The Parking, Transportation and Fleet Services Department is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and enforcement of all University Medical Center parking; vehicle and pedestrian movement and eet vehicle maintenance. Transportation Services operates several routes that transport patients, visitors, staff and students on and off the Health Campus.Parking, Transportation and Fleet Services is responsible for managing parking and transit services as well as eet operations for the UC Davis Health campus. Their vision focus is on customer service by increasing our modes and clarity of communication, utilizing new technology to provide service options, optimizing people ow on the UCDH campus, as well as educate patients, staff, faculty and students on campus parking and transit policies. This is intended to create a better experience for all stakeholders by increasing compliance, while promoting environmental stewardship and continuing to expand our offerings of alternative transportation options. Work Environment
- Maintain participation in the DMV Pull Notice System. Work overtime, weekends, and special events as required. Operate a commercial motor vehicle several hours in various trac and weather conditions.
- Work is performed in the eld, operating the bus, regardless of weather conditions.
- The Driver may be exposed to noise, fumes, and various road conditions.
