Job Summary

Under general direction, Biomedical Equipment Technician 4's act as technical experts and function as leads. Biomedical Equipment Technicians at this level perform all duties and responsibilities of a Biomedical Equipment Technician 3 as well as consistently perform a variety of complex and specialized tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of clinical equipment including life support equipment. The Biomedical Equipment Technician 4 typically directs the work of the Biomedical Equipment Technicians and monitors their progress. In addition, the Biomedical Equipment Technician 4 provides mentoring to all Biomedical Equipment Technicians and conducts departmental training sessions covering safe operation and maintenance of equipment as required. A Biomedical Equipment Technician 4 participates on committees, routinely coordinates and manages projects, both routine and complex, from start to completion, and performs any necessary communication and follow- up with departments. Provides leadership and prioritization of work in absence of a Supervisor. BMET 4 is a senior technical leader within the Clinical Engineering team, primarily being more responsible for the maintenance and repair and operational readiness of advanced biomedical equipment in the Operating Room OR. This position provides a leadership and technical support to junior BMETs ensures compliance with regulatory standards and oversees the successful management of high-risk and life-support medical devices. Clinical Engineering technicians are responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of medical equipment. The Operating Room/Anesthesia Group is responsible for the repair and maintenance of anesthesia equipment, a wide variety of operating room equipment, and general biomedical equipment. This position is primarily responsible for providing repair and maintenance for complex medical and electromechanical medical devices, focusing on life-support anesthesia machines, and including patient monitoring equipment and a variety of other ICU and OR equipment including networked medical devices (e.g. central stations, networked OR/anesthesia equipment).

Minimum Qualifications

  • California Driver's License (DL)
  • CBET Certification
  • Bachelor's degree on Biomedical Engineering, Electronics or a related field OR 10+ years of experience in biomedical equipment management.
  • Due to the very high-risk nature of the life support equipment repaired, prior completion of at least one factory technician training class on anesthesia machines is required.
  • Bachelor's degree on Biomedical Engineering, Electronics or a related field OR 10+ years of experience in biomedical equipment management.
  • Advanced electronic technician skills including electronic troubleshooting, system troubleshooting, ability to read electronic schematics, perform electronic and electromechanical assembly and repair.
  • Technical knowledge of biomedical instrumentation, including computerized medical systems and computer/medical device networking.
  • Working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to a sufficient level as required to understand the equipment being repaired and maintained.
  • Ability to communicate with staff and vendors regarding equipment issues with both verbal and written communication methods.
  • Excellent communication (verbal, listening, and written) skills.
  • Skills to read electronic schematics in order to perform electronic and electromechanical assembly and repair.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CLES or CRES Certifications
  • Demonstrated leadership experience providing technical support to junior BMETs to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and oversee the successful management of high-risk and life-support medical devices.

Willing to respond to emergency off-hours repair calls on nights, weekends and holidays. Willing to work overtime for special projects and emergency repairs. Position requires a California Driver's License; may be subject to drug and alcohol testing and the DMV pull notice system. May be occasionally required to be available on a paid standby basis for emergency repair calls on nights, weekends and holidays. Willing to respond to emergency off-hours repair calls on nights, weekends and holidays. Willing to work overtime for special projects and emergency repairs
