DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In the role of an Equipment Operator at PennDOT, you will have a vital responsibility in ensuring the safety of Pennsylvania roads. Your duties will involve operating trucks, loaders, and other necessary equipment. It will be essential for you to conduct thorough pre-and post-operations checks on a daily basis, documenting them in accordance with departmental and legal requirements Additionally, when not operating equipment, you will be expected to perform flagger duties for traffic control. You will also be responsible for various manual labor tasks, utilizing both motorized and non-motorized hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, and more. It will be crucial for you to select and use tools appropriately to minimize wear and breakage, while promptly reporting any missing or damaged equipment. Your duties will also involve tasks like cleaning culverts, cutting grass and brush, erecting signs, digging ditches, and performing repairs to guiderails and barriers.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment.
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
- Travel and overtime may be required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs. Work hours will vary for 24 hour seasonal requirements.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program employed by the Commonwealth of PA; or
- Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
- Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Conditions of Employment:
- All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
- Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
- Certain positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
