Definition

Under general supervision, performs skilled tasks in maintaining and improving the City's parks and landscaped areas.
Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Park Maintenance Technician role involves a diverse range of maintenance and repair tasks throughout the parks and landscaped areas. This skilled position includes duties such as checking continuity and voltage of electrical leads, repairing lights and timers, conducting carpentry repairs, painting, and performing plumbing work. These responsibilities require the use of specialized tools and equipment, including multimeters, saws, drills, paint sprayers, and plumbing tools. The Park Maintenance Technician must work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take initiative to ensure that all parks and landscaped areas are safe, functional, and well-maintained for the community.

Essential Functions

This position involves duties at the advanced journey level and work is performed independently and requires the ability to exercise independent judgement in dealing with the public and following safety procedures. This position may occasionally coordinate the work of lower level staff and/or contractors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The employee must have the ability to:
  • * Assist with the coordination of the City's technical services program; evaluate the work requests; schedule work in priority order; repair, alter, install and test irrigation systems; diagnose electrical and irrigation systems; check continuity and voltage of electrical leads; repair lights and timers; make carpentry repairs; painting and plumbing.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Exercise judgement in troubleshooting problems.
  • Work independently without direct supervision; exercise a high degree of independent judgement when dealing with the public and other governmental agencies.
  • Determine cause of irrigation system failures and take corrective action.
  • Interpret and work from plans and specifications.
  • Work under adverse conditions such as underground in trenches, pits, vaults etc., and at high levels.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals.
  • Maintain and update records, logs, and reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned personnel.
  • Employee must perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry, and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions. The incumbent is also required to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment.

Experience and Training Guidelines

EX PERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have knowledge of:
  • Operation of Toro Sentinel or similar CCIS irrigation systems.
  • Appropriate safety policies and procedures.
  • The safe and effective use and operation of hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work. * Plumbing Codes and regulations.
  • Principles of personnel supervision and training.
  • Irrigation problem diagnosis and management.
  • Trench shoring.
Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience in performing park maintenance, landscape, and construction.
Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
Licenses and/or Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, an appropriate, valid California Class "B" Driver's License w/Tanker Endorsement.
