Full Range: $21.75 - $34.00 hourly

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

The TB Contact Investigation Medical Assistant analyzes medical history and interviews assigned TB cases to determine and assign evaluation priority to exposed contacts; locates suspect cases and/or case contacts and arranges/coordinates for their medical examination and treatment; provides health education on exposure, prevention, and screening.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Medical Technology, Health Sciences, or a health-related field

  • A combination of related experience and/or post-secondary education may substitute for theBachelor's Degree requirement on a year-for-year basis (no substitute accepted for the MA Certificate)

We Also Value

  • Medical Assistant Certificate of Completion from an accredited health care training program

  • Bilingual Spanish/English skills

  • Experience performing venipuncture and administering injections or vaccines

  • Experience using electronic medical records

  • Experience working as a Communicable Disease Investigator for a local public health department of state health services agency

  • Experience working with the public conducting health-related field investigations for communicable diseases

  • Experience working with TB or epidemiological data related to TB

Job Contributions

  • Conducts case investigations with utmost regard to confidentiality by researching, identifying, locating, and contacting individuals in Maricopa County who are infected or may have been exposed to TB and refer those individuals for diagnosis and treatment to reduce the spread of the disease

  • Collaborates with clinic nurses and other clinical teams to analyze medical history of cases to appropriately plan investigation efforts, maintain caseload, and prioritize outreach strategies

  • Interviews patient cases to elicit contacts and obtain epidemiological information, such as risk factors and previous disease status

  • Conducts assessments of active TB case's environments (such as home, workplace, church, jail, etc.) to determine air flow, proximity to others, time spent with others, etc.

  • Participates in teaching and educating patients and families about communicable diseases and program processes

  • Collects specimens such as blood, sputum, urine etc., from patients receiving care from one or more of the clinical programs of the division

  • Enters data, contacts medical providers, produces data reports, and educates patients and providers regarding disease interventions

  • Maintains accurate and current patient medical records, spreadsheets, and data

  • Maintains professional outreach processes for common community partners (i.e. Hospital, Jails, shelters, churches, workplaces, and schools)

Working Conditions

  • Work will vary between a clinical setting and home visits in diverse communities

  • Work performed in a clinical environment involves extended periods of standing, walking, reaching, and crouching with potential exposure to biohazard materials such as bodily specimens (e.g., blood, urine, oral fluid), loud noises, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 20 lbs

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Must maintain the ability to use and have a personal vehicle available throughout employment to drive to various locations within Maricopa County, in all weather conditions

  • Must complete the OSHA/Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure and Defensive Driving training within three months of hire

  • Within one month of hire, all employees are required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
