Job Title: Field Service - Off-Highway Equipment Technician

Location: Altoona Iowa

Company: Interstate Power Systems

The Field Service Off-Highway Diesel Equipment Technician performs diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on heavy diesel equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, and other off-highway machinery. The technician works in the field, traveling to customer sites to address equipment issues, minimize downtime, and ensure compliance with safety and performance standards.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Diagnose and Repair: Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on off-highway diesel equipment using diagnostic tools, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Perform Maintenance: Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and inspections, to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Field Service: Travel to customer sites or remote locations to perform repairs, maintenance, or emergency service on equipment.
  • Component Replacement: Replace or repair faulty components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, or undercarriage systems.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Perform minor welding, cutting, or fabrication tasks to repair or modify equipment as needed.
  • Documentation: Complete service reports, document parts used, and record maintenance activities for warranty, billing, and inventory purposes.
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate with customers to explain repairs, provide recommendations, and ensure satisfaction with service.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety regulations, maintain a clean work environment, and follow manufacturer and company protocols.
  • Tool and Equipment Management: Maintain and organize tools, service vehicles, and diagnostic equipment to ensure operational readiness.


Qualifications:



  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or certification in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of experience repairing and maintaining off-highway diesel equipment (e.g., Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere, or Hitachi).
  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and electronic controls.
    • Proficiency with diagnostic tools (e.g., ET, SIS, or OEM software) and hand/power tools.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
    • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Basic welding and fabrication skills (preferred).
    • Excellent communication and customer service skills.


  • Certifications: Manufacturer-specific training (e.g., CAT, Komatsu) or ASE Heavy Duty Truck/Equipment certifications are a plus.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy parts (up to 50-75 lbs.), work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license required; CDL (Commercial Driver's License) may be preferred.


Work Environment:



  • Primarily field-based, working at customer sites, construction yards, or remote locations.
  • May involve irregular hours, including nights, weekends, or emergency callouts.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and extreme weather conditions.
  • Requires travel, sometimes overnight, depending on service area.
