Outboard Motor Mechanic

SUMMARY

The outboard mechanic role is responsible for troubleshooting, analyzing defects, and repairing electrical and mechanical systems of small marine vessels in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. This role is going to be focused on the overall maintenance and upkeep of survey boats and crew boats, predominantly pertaining to outboard motors.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairing outboard motors both in the shop and in the field on smaller marine vessels.
  • Disassembling and reassembling outboard motors and parts.
  • Inspecting and troubleshooting outboard motors for damaged or defective parts.
  • Replacing parts including, but not limited to, gears, pitons, piston rings, magneto points, spark plugs, propellers, etc.
  • Testing motor performance are various speeds.
  • Performing and scheduling preventative maintenance on outboard motors and systems.
  • Monitoring, repairing, and testing plumbing systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems pertaining to the motors.
  • Maintaining the overall health of Callan's crew boats and survey boats.
  • Ordering parts and equipment to facilitate repairs.
  • Maintaining accurate work logs and/or work orders.
  • Maintaining an accurate inventory for all needed parts for efficient repairs.
  • Communicating with supervisors' progress and/or delays in equipment repair.
  • Maintaining a clean work environment, following all Company safety policies and procedures.
  • Performing other tasks as instructed by your manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree or Outboard Mechanic certificate preferred.
  • Must have 5+ years of experience as a marine mechanic, working on outboard motors.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with hydraulic, plumbing, and electrical systems as they pertain to outboard motors.
  • Must have knowledge of boat steering systems.
  • Must have ability to travel and on short notice.
  • Must be reliable and have, or have the ability to get, a TWIC card.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must perform the job's essential functions with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD's), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done. In addition, the employee must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, twisting, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting repetitively and/or for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30lbs individually. Anything greater than 30lbs and up to 60lbs will require additional lifting means.
  • Must be able to push and pull at peak force of 150lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and/or vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.
  • Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
  • Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
