This is a 100% Contract position for 1 year with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status.

DESCRIPTION

Facilities Management's (FM) Project Management (PM) group collaborates with campus departments to deliver a full spectrum of construction services for renovation, alteration, and maintenance projects. The PM group is responsible for managing all phases of a project, including project programming, design, bidding, construction, inspections, and project closeout, while ensuring that all work complies with the California Building Code, the Public Contracting Code, and other applicable laws.

Plans, organizes, and directs the skilled trades staff within the UCSD Small Projects Team, managing all aspects of trade-related project execution from development to closeout. Oversees renovation budgets, including labor and materials, for projects up to and above $50,000, ensuring adherence to timelines, quality control, and compliance with organizational policies, procedures, laws, and internal controls. Provides day-to-day supervision, coordination, and leadership of skilled trades personnel, assigning work, prioritizing schedules, and upholding standards. Leads and supervises renovation and repair work in plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, plastering, electrical, HVAC, and general construction.

Implements safety measures, including work in confined spaces, and educates staff on workplace hazards and safety policies. Builds positive relationships with diverse campus stakeholders and delivers excellent service to clients. Recommends personnel actions, assists in budget planning, and monitors costs to ensure compliance with allocated funds. Monitors performance metrics, evaluates workflow, sets project priorities, and engages in training to maintain proficiency. Provides first-response support in emergencies and actively seeks improvements in operational and facilities processes, ensuring ethical and responsible conduct in a dynamic service environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven supervisory experience with tenant improvement projects, with expertise in managing trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, or mechanical. Skilled at applying management methods and principles to motivate teams, foster a positive work environment, and optimize workflow and staffing structures to meet operational and service needs. Demonstrated experience in providing program and project oversight, including supervising and directing project teams to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

  • Knowledge of building and construction, design, construction contract administration and state building codes. Demonstrated experience in building and construction, design, construction contract administration, and state building codes. Proven expertise in construction management, including overseeing project budgets, schedules, construction/installation activities, inspections, and building commissioning. Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing union trades staff, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements, and navigating union regulations in the workplace.

  • Experience utilizing various project estimating methods including computerized software systems.

  • Strong written and editing skills to prepare concise, accurate and understandable reports, policy/procedure documentation, proposals and general correspondence.

  • Experience operating personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, maintenance/project management software and/or web-based programs.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work both inside the university as well as with external resources at multiple levels of an organization. Proven experience in a customer-centric environment with a strong focus on communication and collaboration. Skilled in effective oral communication, with the ability to clearly and concisely convey information to diverse individuals and groups. Demonstrated experience in coordinating the work of trades professionals and subcontractors, with a strong track record of facilitating successful project outcomes.

  • Ability to multi-task in a high-pressure environment. Excellent understanding of client relations and team building practices. Experience working in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, subject to frequently changing priorities requiring initiative and independent problem solving. Experience analyzing assignments and projects, gathering data and information, determining and evaluating solutions or alternatives and providing recommendation. Ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action.

  • Demonstrated ability to build a successful team by supporting individual members, maximizing skills and providing advice, information or other support as needed. Ability to demonstrate a sense of direction and customer service purpose.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must possess and maintain valid California Driver License.

  • DOJ/FBI and DMV background checks and clearances required prior to hire.

  • Ability to work in morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human and animal bodies or parts thereof may be exposed to view of worker.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $77,000 - $139,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $36.88 - $66.67

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
