Job Summary

Specify, design, and modify power system protection schemes, develop protective relaying settings, and assist in the commissioning of electric utility substations to maintain the integrity and stability of the ERCOT transmission grid. Evaluate and apply NERC compliance standards. Serve as an SME on various internal and external working groups.

Essential Functions

  • Develop substation protection schemes and specify relays for use in independent primary and back-up relaying systems, interacting with other engineering sections, equipment vendors, engineering firms, and construction contractors.
  • Calculate and program substation protective relay set points for electromechanical and microprocessor relays and issue to field personnel.
  • Interact with independent power producers, industrial customers, engineering firms, and construction contractors providing technical assistance and commissioning of new equipment for the interconnection with the ERCOT transmission grid.
  • Provide support to field personnel in commissioning of new facilities and the troubleshooting of existing substation facilities.
  • Analyze fault events and develop sequence of events reports following system disturbances, with data obtained from digital fault recorders and microprocessor relays.
  • Program substation relays, PLCs, and DDRs to ensure system reliability and functionality between substation and other field devices.
  • Build short circuit cases for ERCOT System Protection Working Group. Provide available fault duties to industrial customers upon request.
  • Leverage knowledge to support implementation of digital technology including 61850 process bus solutions.
  • Have knowledge of high speed pilot protection schemes including POTT, DCB, and LCD.

Education Description

Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an accredited college or university.

A Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Texas.

Experience

  • Requires a minimum of five years of electric utility or power engineering experience that includes performing engineering calculations and design.
  • Able to use software programs to provide project documentation, relay settings, event analysis, and equipment commissioning reports.
  • Able to use personal computer software proficiently, such as those for word processing, spreadsheets, database managers, presentations, and electronic mail.
  • Able to use mathematics, including trigonometry and calculus, to complete complex engineering design calculations and relate mathematical solutions to actual utility situations.
  • Able to interpret, analyze and produce electrical models, drawings and technical documents.
  • Able to apply knowledge of electrical theory and system operations to daily decisions.
  • Able to make informed decisions, follow procedures and comply with policies based on the knowledge of the work and the services provided by CenterPoint Energy.
  • Able to calculate system short circuit quantities using sequence networks.
  • Able to work well with both technical and non-technical personnel to gather and exchange information, resolve issues, plan activities and meet or exceed objectives.
  • Able to manage time effectively, handle multiple tasks and priorities, operate under general direction, develop own work methods as required yet follow standard procedures and determine when management is to be consulted on unusual situations.
  • Able to communicate effectively, in oral and written form, with co-workers, customers, vendors and the community.Able to exercise discretion, tact and good judgment.
  • Able to use SAP, GIS, Microstation for technical engineering applications.
  • Able to interpret and apply the National Electric and National Electric Safety Codes.
  • Able to understand and follow electric safety principals and work safely around energized equipment and environments where CNP facilities are located.

Physical Requirements
  • Able to certify and use personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs on a daily basis.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.
  • Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
Working Conditions
  • Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner.
  • Able to travel occasionally overnight.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites.
