Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime eligible position in Academic and Career Advising on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.
Position Purpose
This position reports to the Director of Academic and Career Advising and is responsible for assisting the Director with monitoring and facilitating academic progress toward graduation for student-athletes. The incumbent works with all athletic sports teams regarding academic performance, arranges for academic counseling, mentoring and tutoring, assuring that the student-athlete stays on track academically to remain eligible to play sports, and ultimately graduate while applying skills necessary for academic success in a post-secondary environment. This position also acts as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, athletic compliance, sport administrators, faculty, academic deans, and student services personnel and actively advocates on behalf of student-athlete academic interests.
The incumbent also supports non-athletic students in Olympia and Tacoma in developing skills for college success, makes referrals to college resources and support services as necessary, assists students in exploring and preparing for careers or post-baccalaureate education, supports engagement in experiential and service learning opportunities including internships, and assists students in understanding Evergreen policies and procedures. This position has responsibility for coordination of events and programs that support the advising process and presentation of advising-related workshops as needed.
Nature and Scope
Essential Functions

  • Provide advising to student-athletes for all sports to support students' eligibility for competition while staying on track to meet academic and career goals.
  • Assist prospective and current student-athletes with understanding the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) academic standards requirements for eligibility.
  • Utilize formal core career competencies, informal assessment tools, and other relevant resources to aid in students' self-assessment and career exploration.
  • Create and facilitate innovative programs and events for students and alumni career education and development.
  • Provide leadership in career development initiatives, such as career leadership programs, internships, outreach initiatives, activities, and offerings in collaboration with campus and employer communities that enhance student career and professional development outcomes.
  • Provide assistance and training for students using the career assessment system Washington Occupational Information System (WOIS); utilize WOIS to generate reports and train staff to use the system.
  • Assist students in navigating the online recruiting platform Handshake and run reports, train faculty and staff, look up information, and lead workshops on using the system.
  • Provide academic and career advising to students and alumni at the Olympia and Tacoma campuses individually, by appointment, drop-in, telephone, email, and in group/workshop settings, including general advising on the undergraduate curriculum and how it relates to career or graduate school pathways; provide advising on job search preparation and resources available for career or graduate school exploration and preparation.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive and current understanding of all academic offerings.
  • Provide graduate and professional school advising, including pre-med, law, business, and allied health.
  • Articulate the career value of a liberal arts education and the benefits of the unique integrative, multi-disciplinary educational approach of The Evergreen State College to prospective students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, and other community constituents, as well as to current students.
  • Develop and maintain understanding of the work of other College units, and make appropriate student referrals.
  • Coordinate designated projects, events, or programs that support academic and career advising.
  • Represent the Academic and Career Advising office to groups within and outside the College.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, retreats, and ongoing professional development activities.
  • Participate in periodic performance evaluations, which may include a self-evaluation.
  • Collaborate with other functional areas across the college to promote student engagement in support of retention and student success.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of NAIA new and continuing eligibility requirements in athletic programming.
  • Excellent skills and abilities in college student advising and support, including interpersonal communication, active listening, ability to explain complex systems, group presentation skills, respect for confidentiality of student advising sessions, and effective representation of the office and College with external groups.
  • Cultural competency to effectively and sensitively work with undocumented, (im)migrant, Latinx, and Latin American students.
  • Knowledge of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies.
  • Knowledge of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Academic Advising Core Competencies.
  • Understanding of the value of a liberal arts education for intellectual and professional development, and ability to explain this to prospective and current students and their family members.
  • Ability to quickly learn Evergreen's educational philosophy and curricular model and explain it to prospective and current students and their family members.
  • Cultural awareness, approachability, and effectiveness in working with all students and staff across social, racial, ethnic, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, status as a protected veteran, religious, and political differences.
  • Knowledge of the job search process, job market trends, occupational, career and employment information sources, as well as the application process for graduate and professional school.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in and support the efforts of the college to create diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities and spaces.
  • Skill and ability to use standard office equipment and computers, including a variety of programs/software, such as Microsoft 365, Banner, Washington Occupational Information System (WOIS), and Handshake; ability to look up and enter information, generate reports, and provide system training individually and in workshops.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, including active listening skills, excellent group presentation skills, respect for confidentiality of student advising sessions, and effective representation of the office and College with external groups.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in a busy services office with continuous student contact.
  • Self-directed and demonstrated initiative, timeliness, and follow-through.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and travel between campus locations as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One year of full-time college-level career advising experience.
  • One year of full-time college-level academic advising experience.
  • Experience designing and implementing career focused programs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student development, counseling, psychology, social work, education, or related field.
  • Experience advising college-level student-athletes.
  • Spanish language proficiency.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
