The Job

Under direct supervision, the apprentice will be trained through coursework at a local college/university and hands-on work experience. A two-year commitment is required to attain the necessary education and training necessary to complete the program. Makes minor repairs and performs preventative maintenance on battery electric and fuel cell vehicles and related equipment; and performs related duties as required.


Examples of Duties

Conduct vehicle inspections as required by established schedules and perform preventative and routine service and maintenance on all mechanical, HVAC, electrical, lighting, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and other related systems and components according to the vehicle or system manufacturer's recommendations.

Assess vehicles when issues and concerns are noted or reported; troubleshoot and determine appropriate course of action to correct identified problems. Acquire needed parts and tools and perform the repair timely and in a professional manner.

Perform the essential functions of the position in the maintenance department or in the field as needed.

Maintains appropriate service and maintenance records in accordance with applicable law and regulations.

Locates and applies technical information from service manuals and publications, uses test equipment, typical shop tools, torque wrenches, jacks, drills, and other tools common to the trade, and operates computer for related data input and retrieval.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and basic vehicular mechanics. Acceptance and attendance at a local college or university is required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: basic vehicular mechanics; minor repairs and adjustment procedures; safe working practices related to all assigned job duties.

Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform basic arithmetical calculations; basic computer skills; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; read and understand policies, procedures, and Agency regulations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations. Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Act (Cal-OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and protective gear including but not limited to respirators and/or hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required.

Candidates will be screened for relevant qualifying experience that consists of an evaluation of education and experience. The most competitively qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process. The selection process may include a combination of written, performance, and oral examinations.
