Overview

D443, VIRGINIA Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) Instrumentation and Control (I&C) provides engineering support for instrumentation, Deep Submergence Systems - Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC), non-voice interior communication systems, lighting, controllers, and electrical auxiliary systems. Technical responsibilities include the development of numerous VIRGINIA Payload Module (VPM), Subsea and Seabed Warfare (SSW), and VIRGINIA Class system design products.

The I&C systems engineering group is responsible for the alarm, monitoring, and safety circuits that transmit data concerning ship systems and equipment conditions to command and control areas. Efficient methods to transmit, receive, and display data from sensors (e.g. programmable logic controllers, VME cards) are also explored by the I&C systems group. This group also engineers the advanced sensing technologies and instrumentation used to supply all HM&E systems with data. This group also engineers video monitoring and recording equipment consisting of underwater cameras, LCD flat panels, and state of the art video switching and recording devices. The I&C systems group also acts as the lead electrical group for DSS-SOC issues for the Electrical Engineering and Design (EED) directorate.

The auxiliary systems engineering group is responsible for the system development and integration of VIRGINIA Class non-propulsion motor controllers, lighting, galley, and select Independent Research and Development (IRAD) projects. Responsibilities include: development of engineering system diagrams, system and equipment specifications, ship installation drawings, test procedures, design and qualification of electrical equipment, and the procurement of engineered components.

This position requires working with other Electric Boat (EB) design and engineering disciplines, shipyard trade organizations, buyers, planners, SUPSHIP, various NAVSEA codes, and subcontractors/vendors on a daily basis.
