Job Summary

This position supports the departmental purpose through the performance of timely and accurate analytical specimen analysis, training and education, evaluating and implementing new procedures, methods and instrumentation, and quality assurance monitoring.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)
  • Must possess California State Issued Clinical Laboratory Science license as appropriate for job responsibilities (current and renewed every two years as required).
  • Possess at least 2 years of experience as a CLS in a Clinical Laboratory with technical knowledge of Blood Bank/Transfusion Services, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Hematology/Hemostasis, Immunology, Microbiology, Toxicology, Cytogenetic and Molecular procedures.
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g. CDPH, CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, NAACLS, FACT, OSHA) for testing and laboratory safety.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, quality system essentials, continuous quality improvement, metrics, data analysis and audit processes Experience performing method validations.
  • Ability to recognize processes that could lead to failures; ability to resolve and report errors and aberrant results appropriately.
  • Possess technical knowledge to troubleshoot instrument/equipment problems and utilize appropriate resources to resolve problems.
  • Knowledge of personal computer, word processing, data management, and spreadsheet software.
  • Must be able to write clear technical reports and/or policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain the security of confidential information, exercise judgment, tact and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information and situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Point-of-Care Specialist Board Certification or Certificate.
  • At least 2 years of experience and/or technical knowledge in Point of Care testing.
  • Adherence to Customer Service principles.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to prioritize duties in an every changing environment.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS/HIS) and Middleware systems.
  • Knowledge of Standard Precautions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team management skills to deal with physicians, technologists, nursing and other staff. Maintain appropriate interdepartmental and outside department communication.
  • Ability to work well under pressure to meet commitments and to remain flexible with a variety of changing demands.
  • Ability to manage several projects or tasks simultaneously and to exercise appropriate judgment when prioritizing projects of assignments.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to assist colleagues as needed.
  • Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment adhering to principles of community.
  • Knowledge of UCDHS and Department of Pathology Polices and procedures.
  • Teaching and communication skills necessary for interactions with medical technology students, pathology residents, and physicians.
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulatory requirements pertaining to the clinical laboratory.

In support of UCDHS' mission of "improving lives and transforming health care," the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides high quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients, both UCDHS' and its affiliates, through the examination and interpretation of tissues, blood and other body fluids. Our laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and located in three distinct facilities: the Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP), the Pathology Building, and the Specialty Testing Center (STC). The department is one of UCDMC's largest ancillary services with annual gross revenues of $405m, expenses of $60m, and more than 250 employees across 21 distinct units and accounts / cost centers.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Incumbent must be able to work variable shifts and be "On Call" as needed. Shifts include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
