Summary: Under general supervision is responsible for the coordination of all Laundry Department production. Identifies tasks in advance and takes appropriate action to remedy or rectify conditions to avoid service disruptions. Responsibilities:
2. Supervises daily activities of subordinate personnel who perform various functions including washing sorting ironing folding and linen assembly. Orients trains develops schedules assigns and appraises staff. Retrain employees semi-annually on current duties correct procedures hazard avoidance and employees and customer relations. Counsels and assists subordinates with work*related problems verbally disciplines and recommends further progressive corrective action to manager. Maintains employee files related to job performance. Performs job interviews and makes recommendations for selection of subordinates. 3. Prepares employee work schedules ensuring daily production meets user demands with workforce available. Establishes work priorities and may change schedules and reassign subordinates to process special orders or requests. Prepares and maintains attendance records on subordinate employees. 4. Ensures heavy equipment such as washers dryers extractors and ironers are maintained in a safe working order by observing operation of same. Authorizes stop in machine operations when necessary contacting Buildings and Grounds Department for maintenance and repair as necessary. 5. Coordinates schedules and maintains records on all equipment related to preventative maintenance and equipment breakdowns with the Manager and Laundry Mechanics . Provides department manager with reports on all repairs and preventative maintenance performed. Makes recommendations to department manager on equipment downtime avoidance. 6. Coordinates the repairs and the ordering of parts for all equipment with the Laundry Mechanic Coordinator Maintenance department and outside vendors. 7. Coordinates and schedules the cleaning or blowing down of all laundry equipment with the Laundry Mechanics Assistant Mechanic and the second shift supervisor and Group Leaders. 8. Ensures work is carried out in accordance with safety procedures. Labels and ensures correct labeling of chemicals ensuring appropriate use of same in accordance with safety and department regulations and procedures. 9. Visually inspects linen to ensure proper quality. Opens and inspects packaged linen to ensure quality of delivered linen. Reviews re-wash statistics to assure same are within acceptable levels. Investigates and corrects deficiencies. 10. Schedules and maintains records of quarterly chemical titrations with outside vendor to ensure proper dilution of chemicals in each wash formula. 11. Ensures and documents linen quality for each processing workstation through visual inspections and through established policies and procedures. Prepares and provides manager with quality control inspection reports and immediately reports problems and suggested resolutions. 12. Completes laundry chemical inventory and orders laundry supplies to ensure they adequate to meet daily production requirements. 13. Interacts with hospital personnel and resolves issues regarding immediate linen needs. Identifies chronic linen shortages and reports same to manager. Assumes duties for manager in his/her absence. Represents the department at meetings in the absence of the manager or as designated by manager. 14. Primary shift is the first shift. Frequently works off shift to monitor and evaluate department production. 15. Interacts with IBT stewards as needed. Participates in grievance resolution meetings and responds to first step IBT grievances. 16. Prepare and maintain a Drivers Qualification Record file on all drivers subject to the established Brown University Health Fleet Risk Control Policy. 17. Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established department policy and the Brown University Health Fleet risk Control Policy and procedures.
Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Supervisory ability to direct activities of service personnel revise schedules and coordinate all aspects of laundry production. Interpersonal skills to interact with hospital personnel in order to coordinate laundry services with needs of user departments. Ability to understand and properly interpret existing IBT agreement as it relates to laundry employees and their interaction with management and operational functions. Physical ability to lift push and carry heavy loads of linen. EXPERIENCE: Associates Degree level of education with ability to perform basic numerical calculations. One to two years progressively more responsible experience within a laundry environment with demonstrated leadership abilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT ANDPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Continuous walking standing and bending. Frequent heavy lifting. Exposure to varying degrees of heat and cold lint and unpleasant odors in work area.
