JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Department of Electrical Engineering within the College of Engineering (COE), Penn State Center of Excellence in Directed Energy (CEDE), and Applied Research Lab (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University invite applications for a tenure-line faculty position in Electromagnetics with emphasis on High Power Microwaves and Optics located in State College, Pennsylvania. This position provides a unique opportunity to serve as a bridge between the COE and ARL and Penn State's vibrant climate research community, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and contributing to impactful research towards national security. This appointment is at the assistant or associate professor rank and begins in July of 2025 at the University Park campus with the tenure home in the Department of Electrical Engineering. We are interested in candidates who bring experience in high power microwave antennas, optical system design, metamaterials, and AI & machine learning approaches in RF and optical modeling. Furthermore, candidates who bring interdisciplinary approaches to a broad set of topics in electromagnetics and optics including: computational electromagnetics, multiphysics modeling, hybrid RF/mechanical metamaterials (e.g., those based on compliant mechanisms). Faculty candidates at both the associate and assistant professor rank will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; conduct cutting-edge research; supervise and mentor graduate students; actively pursue external funding to support research activities; engage in service activities at the college and university levels as well as in professional societies; and collaborate with faculty across the university and industry partners. Candidates at both the associate and assistant professor rank must hold a PhD in electrical engineering, optical sciences, physics, or a related field before their appointment start date at Penn State. Candidates at both ranks should have a strong record of scholarly achievement, service, and demonstrated success in external funding. The successful candidate will assume a key role in Directed Energy research within CEDE and is co-funded through the Applied Research Laboratory. The successful candidate should be a collaborative leader who will promote and enhance excellence and innovation in research between COE and ARL. Furthermore, the successful candidate will develop new optics courses within the Department of Electrical Engineering. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
