Organizational Unit Overview
It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University School of Medicine, to provide exemplary education/training of physicians in Pediatric Medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the Department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region.
Job Duties
Position will document, in a timely manner, encounters with children, families, staff and agencies. The individual will report abuse, neglect and dependency concerns to the Department of Social Services and follow-up with documentation and phone calls with progress of the case. Position will coordinate with other Pediatric HIV Social Workers at other sites where Pediatric HIV care is being so delivered, that a uniform standard of care is provided. Conduct home visits as indicated. Position will document services provided and time spent for each, so that reimbursement for services by North Carolina Medicaid can be accomplished. This position will receive training and ongoing instruction from the Senior Social Worker at the Duke Medical Center and will participate in in-service education/group activity involving HIV care at ECU Health Medical Center and ECU. This position will participate in NC AIDS Action Network trainings and meetings. The individual will apply for grants or seek funding and/or resources for HIV patients and their families. The individual will assist in enrolling children into medical protocols for Aids clinical trials, as needed. The individual will assess psychosocial information to determine if this particular child and family is eligible and appropriate for the protocol. The Pediatric ID social work practitioner will lead the Maternal Pregnancy ID meetings and act as a liaison between the High-Risk OB Department. The social worker will serve as an advocate and coordinate the community resources that provide services and assistance for families and children with HIV. Specifically, the Pediatric HIV Social Worker-Case Manager will: 1. Provide psychosocial services to HIV patients and their families including: a. Complete psychosocial database at initial visit and updating as needed. This database will be used for individual care, as well as anonymously in aggregate for research purposes. b. Provide counseling to families and children on issues of illness, disease progression, death and dying, grief, loss, reproduction, safer sex, disclosure of diagnosis, financial management insurance, future care, quality of life, medical care, medication compliance, hygiene, nutrition, foster care, respite care, adoption, school, day care and neglect; provide HIV lab results to patients and their families. c. Monitor clinic attendance, medication compliance, proper hygiene, nutrition and transportation to clinic. d. Assist care givers in obtaining medical care and dental care. e. Make referrals to community agencies and programs. f. Provide education/training on psychosocial aspects of Pediatric HIV to pediatric care givers, hospital staff, clinic staff and others who are involved in the care of these patients which might include: Aids service organizations, home health agencies and hospices, health department foster care agencies and foster parents, schools and day care centers and advocacy groups.

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as its teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for ECU Health.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience working in a medical setting is highly desirable. Specific experience working with children and families and/or HIV/ AIDS population preferred.
