Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Groundskeeper Group III completes tasks relating to irrigation, chemical application, and sports turf management for the University of the Pacific's grounds and completes other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions

  • Replace and repair irrigation sprinklers, pipes, valves, and controllers.
  • Troubleshooting irrigation problems.
  • Program and maintain irrigation clocks and controllers.
  • Irrigation Management & Maintenance System (IMMS) program and scheduling.
  • Install new or re-designed sprinkler systems.
  • Maintain irrigation pumps.
  • Identify landscape pest problems.
  • Order irrigation parts and accessories, as needed.
  • Gauge water requirements so lawns, shrubs, trees, and athletic fields are healthy.
  • Work on special projects.
  • Perform irrigation work, refuse removal, tree maintenance, and paint fields.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Identifies maintenance or repair needs.
  • Cooperate with other people within the departments and other department personnel to complete assigned tasks.
  • Display the necessary initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Five (5) years of experience directly related to chemical application.
  • Must possess a current Qualified Applicator License or Qualified Applicators Certificate through the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
  • Five (5) years of experience directly related to Irrigation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree.
  • Ten (10) years' experience related to Landscaping preferred.
  • A certified irrigation technician or certified water auditor is preferred.
  • Experience maintaining athletic fields.
  • Proven knowledge of small and large grounds equipment maintenance and operation.
  • Possess good communication skills and works well with others.
  • Working knowledge of lawn maintenance, irrigation work and of lawn maintenance equipment use and repair.
  • Working knowledge of athletic field maintenance.
  • Ability to accurately calibrate chemical equipment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain large equipment including backhoe tractor, tractor attachments, bobcats, large trucks, trenchers, and other equipment.
  • Working knowledge of pest and diseases in landscape.
  • Ability to read and understand chemical labels.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.


Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to various temperatures and weather elements. Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, chemicals, and/or loud noises. Extensive physical activity.
Constant bending, walking, standing, lifting up to 100 lbs., pushing or pulling up to 200 lbs. Ability to climb a ladder and work at heights. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Repetitive use of hands.

Work Environment/Workweek/Travel:
Must be willing to work weekends and odd hours in emergency situations.

Requires Physical and Respiratory Fit Testing. Ability to use or wear respirator.

Union membership required.

Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $30.84 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
