Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
The part-time, Academic Success Coach position is a restricted, grant funded position that supports the TRIO Student Support Services program. This program is funded by a federal Department of Education grant. The part-time Academic Success Coach position provides career and academic advising for first generation, low income, and/or disabled students participating in the TRIO Student Support Services program. In addition, the part-time Coach provides academic development support to improve student success. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Plans and develops workshops, provides transfer, career and academic advising, monitors progress of students' non-cognitive and cognitive skills, advocates and promotes students' self-advocacy skills, collaborates with other student services departments and faculty to best meet student needs and ensure academic success, and maintains accurate records and reports.

This position is funded through August 31, 2025.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Knowledge of advising and coaching principles and practices; Record-keeping, organizational, and time management skills; Ability to serve diverse customers; Current computer software skills such as Microsoft Office Suite; Experience providing student services to a diverse student population; Valid driver's license
Additional Considerations
Knowledge of grants and college student services, preferred; Experience using student information systems, preferred; Experience planning and coordinating events and activities, preferred; Experience with outreach to promote programs or services, preferred; Experience in working under a grant/grant guidelines and regulations, preferred; Academic advising, and/or case management experience, preferred; Experience working in a college setting, preferred; Firsthand experience successfully overcoming barriers similar to those faced by SSS eligible students, preferred
