Job Functions: The Accounting Manager of Grants and Contracts is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the post-award grant function in the Finance Department. Responsible for providing strategic and day-to-day leadership in the grant accounting area to include grants management, procurement, account reconciliations, and fiscal monitoring. Other responsibilities include maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures, as well as meeting strict deadlines and preparing for year-end audits.

The Accounting Manager will work closely with the Assistant Controller to accomplish the organization's and department's mission and goals. In addition, the Accounting Manager will be expected to communicate financial information accurately and professionally to the VP of Finance and other department heads.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Manage and supervise grant accounting staff.
  2. Monitor grants received to ensure compliance with the requirements of the sponsor agency, state and federal law, and Metro's policies and procedures.
  3. Ensure that all appropriate grant reimbursements are accurately applied for and received in a timely manner.
  4. Prepare grant budgets worksheets for upload to the financial management system.
  5. Ensure the accuracy of the grant budgets, oversee spending, and meet financial reporting requirements.
  6. Lead virtual/on-site fiscal monitoring of grants and sub-awardees.
  7. Maintain grant-related paperwork, including contracts, subcontracts, spreadsheets, emails, etc.
  8. Assist in the preparation of the annual SEFA for the year-end audit.
  9. Respond to program manager inquiries regarding grant budget allocations and use of grant funds.
  10. Prepare routine and closing journal entries, and review those prepared by other accountants as requested by the Assistant Controller and VP of Finance.
  11. Review the general ledger for grant activity accuracy regularly.
  12. Recruit, hire, and train new employees.
  13. Manage the full accounting cycle, including timely monthly close process.
  14. Assist with implementation of necessary fiscal policies and internal control procedures for efficient and accurate financial reports in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  15. Ensure financial transactions are properly authorized and recorded according to policies and procedures.
  16. Provide or obtain all information necessary for annual audit to ensure its timely and cost-effective completion on an expedited basis.
  17. Prepare and maintain up to date, written, fully explanatory procedures for all task responsibilities.
  18. Adhere to proper accounting methods, policies, and principles, and proactively provide recommendations for process improvement.
  19. Serve as backup for accounting duties assigned to other staff members.
  20. Ensure excellent service by providing timely and accurate financial information.
  21. Prepare accurate, comprehensive, and timely year-end work papers to be submitted to the outside auditors.
  22. Support the Assistant Controller and VP of Finance with the annual audit.
  23. Coordinate cross-training and identify training needs for staff.
  24. Set up and monitor accounting KPIs. Meets personal goals and actively contributes to the achievement of team and organizational targets/goals according to KPI's and the organizational strategic plan. Support the team in other tasks as assigned.
Requirements

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting preferred with at least 5 years of full accounting cycle experience, including month and year end close and accounts payable/receivable, preferable in a non-profit organization. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Grant experience is required.

Superior analytical skills with above-average MS Excel Skills required. Demonstrate capacity to judge and manage numerous projects simultaneously. Proven ability to be a team player, self-starter and motivated in performing duties and responsibilities of the job and goals of the Finance Department. Flexibility, willingness, and ability to respond to a rapidly changing environment.

Knowledge and understanding of grant reporting compliance including Federal and State rules and regulations (OMB's Super Circular).

Skills Requirements:

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Computer literate with a working knowledge of general ledger and payroll systems, as well as web-based research tools. Expert proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Self-motivated, ability to multi-task/manage many projects simultaneously, and shift priorities as needed. Must be able to work independently and also be a team player. Works well under pressure and meets deadlines.

Requires heart for ministry and comfort working with poor and homeless families and individuals. Requires understanding of poverty, a high degree of maturity, strong inter-personal skills and the ability to work with low socio-economic and diverse populations facing crisis situations in a professional and diplomatic manner. Knowledge of community resources available to homeless population. Must demonstrate maturity and sensitivity to issues of faith, culture, and other sources of diversity.? Ability to work as part of a team within a multi-disciplinary framework.

Physical Requirements:

Hearing and speaking ability which allows for effective oral communication of information; physical, emotional, and spiritual stamina to handle job-related issues and stress.

Other:
