Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
As the Veterans Affairs (VA) School Certifying Official, ensures compliance with federal Department of Veteran Affairs ( DVA) and state Department of Veteran Services ( DVS) regulations - annual catalog approvals, annual VA compliance surveys (audits), 85/15 reporting each term, and other compliance/audit requirements. Certifies military/veteran enrollment to ensure compliance with federal regulations. Serves as the Financial Aid Office ( FAO) point of contact for US Department of Veterans' Affairs and State Approving Agency. Serves as the point of contact for military Tuition Assistance programs. Collaborates with office of Financial and Administrative Services to ensure proper billing for military/veterans' benefits. Works closely with the VERITAS military student advisor. Works with SCHEV in packaging, managing, and reconciling state funds for veteran dependent benefits ( VMSDEP). Informs and updates FAO and college staff about VA regulations. Trains Financial Aid Office staff member assigned backup for military/veteran benefits. Assists with various financial aid duties including assisting students and families, reviewing Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals, ensuring appropriate packaging of Virginia State Financial Aid Program funds in combination with VA benefits, and other duties as assigned.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Knowledge of education benefit programs for veterans, active-duty military, and spouses/dependents; Knowledge of financial aid principles and practices; Excellent skills in the use of computers and various software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite products and online meeting software; Flexibility and motivation to learn new systems; Strong analytical and computational skills; Outstanding interpersonal/human relations skills, and the capacity to work with virtually all types of people; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Excellent skills in basic office procedures (e.g., filing, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.); Ability to establish goals and priorities and make decisions based on program and institutional policies; Ability to interpret and explain academic, administrative, and veteran policies; Ability to provide veteran students with accurate information as it relates to GI Bill benefits and other veteran-eligible education benefits; Experience working with veteran and military-related education benefit programs, students and families; Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc; Experience working with the general public, particularly in an agency serving clients from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Additional Considerations
Experience working in a college financial aid office (strongly preferred); Experience working with PeopleSoft Student Information System ( SIS), preferred.
