Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for an Education Support Specialist II position to work in the Student Life department to support recipients of the Educational Foundation's Fralin Futures STEM-H Scholarship Program. The purpose of the Fralin Futures Student Success Coach is to provide tailored, enriched learning opportunities and help recipients of the Educational Foundation's Fralin Futures STEM-H Scholarship Program define, plan and progress toward their educational goal of graduating in their award year. The position will support a cohort of Fralin Futures scholarship recipients by: 1) organizing career, leadership and mentorship activities that are relevant for a STEM-H cohort; 2) providing a central point of contact to assist students and help them successfully navigate available resources at the College. The position also will be responsible for reporting cohort outcomes to the Educational Foundation and assisting the College in recruitment of STEM-H students.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Knowledge of College activities and student life programs. Awareness of STEM-H fields and career paths. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to operate independently with general direction in developing creative programs and activities for College students. Knowledge and skills needed to plan and manage special events and programs. Computer skills are important with knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software programs. Candidate must possess a valid Driver's License. Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and non-traditional work hours in support of College and student organization programs. Must be able to work effectively and collaboratively get along with a wide range of people and organizations.
Additional Considerations
A combination of knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to an associate degree. Experience in planning, programming and implementing a wide variety of student activities or leadership development programs is preferred. Experience in an institution of higher education setting working with students is desired.
