Job Summary Reporting to the vice president and faculty dean of students (VPFDS), with dotted line reporting to the president, and serving as a liaison with the Student Experience committee of the Caltech Board of Trustees, the Associate Vice President of Student Life (AVPSL) is the senior most Institute staff member responsible for a comprehensive student experience portfolio delivered to approximately 1,000 undergraduate students and 1,400 graduate students. The AVPSL will oversee approximately 90 staff in twelve units in the student affairs division including areas related to health and wellness, extra- and co-curricular activities, advising, and the residential experience. This is a campus critical position. An employee designated as campus critical is expected to be aware of the campus emergency management plan and to report to campus as soon as possible to assist in campus wide response and recovery efforts in the event of an emergency. Essential Job Duties The AVPSL will provide strategic and operational guidance to foster co-curricular student life equal in caliber and creativity to Caltech's academic and research experience. The AVPSL will develop an enhanced vision for student life at Caltech and a plan to realize it. Integral to the success of the AVPSL is the ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with colleagues in the office of the VPFDS, colleagues across campus, academic leaders, Institute senior leadership, trustees, student leaders, families, and alumni to ensure the overall success and wellbeing of Caltech's student body. The AVPSL, working collaboratively, will: Foster and develop innovative, responsive programs that enhance student success, student engagement, build community, ensure wellness and well-being, and cultivate personal development. Review and update relevant student-related policies to ensure the best co-curricular experience for all students and to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and Institute policies. Supervise and develop a talented, diverse, collaborative, and success-oriented group of student affairs professionals. Engage in a calm, collaborative, and confidential manner when student-related crises arise. Provide guidance to student leaders and other students engaging in leadership activities across campus. Represent the VPFDS as needed Serve as the liaison to the Student Experience Committee of the Caltech Board of Trustees. The AVPSL will manage the following groups: Accessibility Services Athletics, Physical Education, Recreation Institute CARE Team Case Management Career Advising and Experiential Learning Counseling Center Fellowships, Advising, Study Abroad Health Center & Occupational Therapy Performing and Visual Arts Registrar Student and Family Experience Student Campus Activities Basic Qualifications Advanced degree in postsecondary administration, STEM, student affairs, or related field. Seven years leadership experience in postsecondary student affairs administration. Outstanding, collaborative, problem solving skills. Demonstrated collaborative crisis response effectiveness within a complex organization. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, motivate staff. Preferred Qualifications Experience within a STEM-focused school. Experience with a comparably sized institution. Demonstrated ability to judge program and initiative effectiveness with data-driven techniques. Required Documents Resume. Cover Letter. Hiring Range $310,000 - $330,000 per year The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
