About This Role

This position provides leadership for the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI) farm headquarters and associated farming operations. Manages permanent staff and student workers. Maintains the well-being of farm ground by supervising planting, harvesting, nutrient management, and equipment maintenance. Manages buildings and other property to maintain the upkeep. Provides support to departmental and stakeholder activities that involve animal units. Reports to the ASI department head.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Work with ASI administration to lease or purchase equipment and/or vehicles used at individual units or held in common by the Farm Shop.
  • Maintain and foster relationships with equipment vendors.
  • Oversee all maintenance (per rental, lease, or warranty requirements) and maintenance/fuel logs for Farm Shop equipment. Schedule use of this Equipment by units.
  • Ensure maintenance is performed and logs are kept by individual units for equipment housed at the units.
  • Minor engine maintenance and/or repairs
  • Participate in supporting departmental and stakeholder events
  • Provide support to unit managers for their maintenance of buildings and land at their unit
  • Manage animal solid and liquid waste storage, composting, and removal from ASI premises in Essential cooperation with individual units across ASI.
  • Manage irrigation pivots (maintenance, winterizing, and seasonal operation) and de-watering of
    lagoons to remain in regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in regulatory compliance for permitted animal facilities
  • Oversee and coordinate fertilization, planting, and harvesting of silage, row and cover crops
    (approximately 500 acres)
  • Provide support to unit managers that coordinate hay harvest (approximately 300 acres)
  • Supervise and manage seasonal activities (mowing, snow removal, spraying, etc.) of common Essential departmental or public areas (e.g. lawns. roads, waterways, etc.) at the collective ASI facilities.
  • Provide equipment and other support to individual unit managers in order for them to maintain
    facility and land resources assigned to the unit in a publicly presentable manner.
  • Manage the development and maintenance of departmental property, grounds and facilities that are not assigned to individual units to optimize their use for departmental activities and provide insight into their use.
  • Serve as primary on-site contact for Physical Facilities, contractors, Foundation, state and/or
    others for MAJOR improvements, repairs and renovations as a result of emergencies (e.g. wind
    damage) or ongoing and planned improvements (e.g. arena, feedlot, horse unit, dairy and
    others).

This role is expected to be performed on-site.


What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • B.S. in agriculture or closely related
  • 3-5 years relevant experience
  • Education equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Supervisory and management experience
  • Business accounting and record keeping experience
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to interact well with others from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated mechanical and agricultural equipment operation skills


Other Requirements:



  • Must have a valid driver's license at time of hire
