About the Job

Co-instructor for teaching introductory geology field mapping to undergraduate Earth Science majors. This introductory course will run for a total of three weeks in June (June 9 - June 30) with additional time required before and after for preparation and grading. This course is a combination of classroom instruction at the University of Minnesota and field teaching near Glen, MT. The field teaching portion of the course will take place from June 11 to June 24 and will include travel from Minneapolis to Glen, MT. While in the field, we will be camping and preparing our meals. Teaching in the field includes basic navigation skills, lithologic mapping, use of a Brunton compass, rock identification, and structural geology. The classroom instruction focuses on developing digital mapping skills using QGIS software. Students are evaluated based on field notebooks, field techniques, field and digital maps, cross-sections, and a final summary of their work.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
PhD in Geology or related field
Current faculty appointment at regionally accredited university
Lead instructor teaching experience at undergraduate level
Knowledge of QGIS; digital mapping techniques
Experience & comfort driving 10 passenger van, basic maintenance, offroad

About the Department

The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences is a vibrant interdisciplinary department whose faculty's research ranges from paleoclimate to deep earth dynamics. The Department is in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences (www.cse.umn.edu/esci) which also includes the Institute for Rock Magnetism, the Continental Scientific Drilling Coordination Facility, the Minnesota Geological Survey, and the Polar Geospatial Center. The majority of the School resides in John T. Tate Hall on the Minneapolis campus, with some labs on the St. Paul campus. Other affiliated research units at the University include the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory, the Institute on the Environment, and the BioTechnology Institute.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $10,000 to $14,000 total course rate; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
