Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is currently seeking applications for and entry level Chemist/Technical Assistant Staff Member who will be involved in the performance of a full range of radiochemical methods and analyses on nuclear materials. This position will support a variety of ORNL projects and programs including its environmental stewardship programs, research for the nuclear fuel cycles, and chemical operations associated with the production and purification of radioisotopes.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform sample preparations and chemical separations for radiochemical determinations of nuclear materials.
  • Assist in performing laboratory tests as needed to assist in developing, modifying, and refining operational and/or experimental procedures.
  • Assist in performing detailed analytical operations in C-zoned laboratories and radiochemical hoods and gloveboxes.
  • Obtain and maintain all ORNL training requirements for a radiation worker performing analytical work in radiological facilities to include being qualified as a respirator wearer.
  • Utilize Windows based personal computers, instrumentation operation, data reporting, analytical calculations, and sample management.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Lead by example according to ORNL's "Research Code of Conduct" for proposing, performing, and communicating research.
  • Ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL's ESH&Q policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Enhance the group's reputation and standing through collaboration, Professional Society leadership, and organizing technical events.
  • Maintain effective communication about scientific efforts both internally and externally, including publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific meetings.
  • Collaborate with staff to address novel and complex technical issues.
  • Conduct laboratory tests to develop, modify, and refine operational and experimental procedures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BSor MSdegree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, physics or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in an analytical laboratory.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Analytical chemistry, particularly in wet chemistry and instrumentation.
    • Thermochemical measurements at high temperatures: heat capacity, thermal analysis, viscosity, interfacial tension, thermal conductivity, vapor pressure, and their relationships to the thermophysical properties of mixtures.
    • Chemical thermodynamics and experimental measurements (enthalpies, vapor pressures, melting points and phase diagrams).
    • Solid, liquid, and gas sample introduction systems and/or instrumentation for inorganic measurements.
    • Chemical characterization techniques and quantitative analyses.
    • Mass spectrometry.
    • Nuclear fuel cycles and associated technologies and operations.
    • Inorganic molten salts and/or air-sensitive materials at high temperatures.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs.
  • Experience working in ISO17025 accredited laboratory setting.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation operations and troubleshooting.
  • Experience performing data analyses and review under standard operating procedures to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, uncertainty terms and quality objectives. Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program
