We are seeking a Transportation Security Technology Operations Specialist who will focus on assessing and improving U.S. domestic capabilities to securely transport radioactive material. This position resides in the Transportation Security Engineering and Analysis (TSEA) group in the Nuclear and Radiological Security (NRS) section, Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), Nuclear Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our team, you will lead technology development, partner and industry integration, and other source security efforts primarily sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Global Material Security (GMS) Office of Radiological Security (ORS).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assess and improve U.S. domestic and regional transportation security capabilities. This includes work with regulators, carriers, response personnel, facility officials, and other partners having stewardship of high-risk materials, including nuclear and radioactive material.
  • Apply knowledge of nuclear and radioactive material supply chains to actively identify potential security gaps, design or propose measures to correct those gaps, and collaborate with government and industry to improve security of high-risk materials in transport.
  • Lead the development and testing of embedded software and systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to integrate hardware and software solutions across different platforms and technologies.
  • Expertise in embedded systems, including embedded C, C++, Python, Linux, and software testing.
  • Coordinate with federal sponsors, domestic and international partners, national laboratory colleagues, nuclear and radioactive material transport industry, and other subject matter experts.
  • Travel to support domestic engagements related to work scope, including leading and facilitating trainings, workshops, exercises, technical exchanges, and meetings.
  • Track and control schedule, budget, and costs for project activities.
  • Analyze data and information to assess the need for, progress of, or outcome of project work.
  • Remain current on all relevant federal- and laboratory-required training related to travel, safety, and security, and maintain a strong commitment to the safe implementation of project work.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS in an engineering or related field readying the candidate for transportation security of radioactive material domestically and five (5) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience developing physical protection systems for hazardous materials transports.
  • Background in systems engineering, cryptography, and networking protocols.
  • Project management, proposal writing, and technical reporting for large research projects.
  • Experience managing research spaces and laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transport (DOT), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations and requirements for the secure transport of nuclear and radioactive material.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience in managing complex technical tasks across teams
  • Leadership qualities commensurate with experience leading teams and working independently of direct supervision.
  • A high level of facility with MS Office products including Word, Excel, Power Point and Teams is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
