GENERAL SUMMARY:
May supervise other staff and using established procedures, performs nursing functions independently and in collaboration with physician investigator. May identify and recruit patients into research projects. Provides for the ongoing execution of study requirements and assures for project adherence. Performs physical assessments as allowable by institutional and state regulations. Provides for educational and/or emotional support to patients registered to research projects. Supports physician investigators and other clinicians as necessary to facilitate project participation and compliance.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for developing and maintaining new employee orientation. May coordinate and oversee Institutional Review Board (IRB) process for new protocol submissions, amendments, renewals, adverse events, close-out at completion, and
additional updates. May coordinate budget and contract negotiation, preparation and completion. Independently or in collaboration with physician investigator, identifies, evaluates and recruits patients into research projects. Assures that project eligibility criteria are met based on patient's physical and psychological status, as well as interpretation of patient's medical records. In conjunction with the physician investigator, participates in the ongoing informed consent processes as stipulated by federal regulations. Verifies that all required evaluations, procedures and pathology submissions are performed prior to patient entry. Assures that registration processes have been completed prior to initiation of protocol treatment.
Informs, educates and in-services other research personnel and clinicians regarding overall project requirements and on a per patient basis as necessary. In collaboration with physician investigator, initiates treatment on project based on registration outcome. Based on institutional policy and State licensure, conducts physical assessments and other patient evaluations.

Provides for ongoing monitoring of patient status during project participation. Assures for appropriate treatment calculations and dosage modifications based on protocol requirements. Assures for the ordering and/or scheduling of patient evaluations to support protocol compliance. Monitors adverse events, informs appropriate personnel and reports to project sponsors
as mandated by federal regulations. Assures that there is adequate documentation of patient status throughout project participation. Provides for psychological, social and educational support to patients and their significant others throughout the course of project participation. Provides for appropriate nursing intervention with respect to overall patient status. Serves as liaison to support patient through multi-disciplinary interventions and treatment modalities. Participates in research-meetings to identify and/or relate research-related issues and provide for appropriate solutions. Provides input as requested during the audit process to clarify and/or resolve any discrepancies or conflicting data. Participates in ongoing continuing education activities and assures that continuing education requirements are maintained with respect to licensure and/or certification, if applicable.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



  • Bachelor's degree preferred. Specialty certification preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of five years of nursing experience or three years of nursing experience in specialty area applicable to position.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong nursing assessment skills. Work requires close attention to detail and the ability to interpret medical findings.
  • Effective personal and professional communication skills and demonstration of teamwork skills are required.
  • Ability to utilize computer software to access and input data.
  • Participates in continuing education activities to improve knowledge of job performance or to maintain credentialing.
