About This Role: The small animal internship at the Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University is a 12-month post-DVM clinical program. Interns rotate between medicine and surgery services with additional time spent in radiology, ophthalmology, oncology and anesthesia. Other elective rotations may be available, including exotics, cardiology, dermatology and clinical pathology. Interns work closely with board certified clinicians in many specialties. Interns participate in after-hours emergency duty on a rotating basis and will remain in the hospital overnight. Interns on emergency duty also assist in oversight of ICU patients and will support the small animal emergency clinician. Faculty clinicians are committed to providing consultation and back-up support for house officers assigned to emergency duty. Participation in daily clinical rounds and scheduled house officer rounds is mandatory. The intern will gain knowledge and proficiency in presenting clinical case material from these experiences. Interns are required to prepare and present one seminar. Interns focus on providing clinical service under the supervision of senior clinicians, and on learning through consultation with radiologists, clinical and anatomic pathologists, and other clinical and basic science specialists. Interns are encouraged to set additional scholarship goals including case studies, case reports, and participation in ongoing research. Interns will not be enrolled in graduate programs and do not take graduate courses. Interns will receive tri-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Intern Advisor and the Hospital Director. The intern must be physically present for orientation on the first day of the program.
