The Department of Neurological Surgery's faculty members, working and teaching at Orange County's only university hospital, are committed to training the next generation of exceptional neuroscientists while providing care to patients with a wide range of neurosurgical conditions, including spinal disorders, traumatic brain injury and trigeminal neuralgia.


Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Neurological Surgery requires a highly competent individual with the flexibility of working independently as well as in a team-oriented environment. Under the direction and supervision of the attending physician and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient setting and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. The Nurse Practitioner II must possess the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills, and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in neurological surgery. The Nurse Practitioner II is accountable for the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the department of Neurological Surgery.

Functions include (but are not limited to) assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all inpatients on the Neurosurgery services. The Nurse Practitioner will participate with inpatient sign out at beginning and end of shift, will follow up with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians. The Nurse Practitioner may be involved in trauma resuscitations surgical consultations, discharging of patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate, triage phone calls regarding surgical patients. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the reviewing of labs, following up on diagnostic and radiographic results, and constructing comprehensive medical histories. The Nurse Practitioner will demonstrate an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.

The Nurse Practitioner will perform clinical assessments and care management services that include construction and interpretation of histories and physical exams. The Nurse Practitioner will also perform initial and periodic physical examinations, mental status examinations and medical history on both in patients and out-patients.

b. changing orders when appropriate and notifying the responsible physician(s) of changes in the patient's condition are but a few of the Nurse Practitioner's daily routine.
2. The Nurse Practitioner will also counsel patients and families as to preventive care, medical problems, psychological problems and use of prescribed treatment and drugs.
3. The Nurse Practitioner will assist in procedures and participate in clinical investigations.
4. The Nurse Practitioner must have California License.
5. The Nurse Practitioner will assist with clinical trials and departmental research projects.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with doctors, nurses other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Skill at clearly communicating medical information to broad variety of people, both in person and on the telephone.
  • Knowledge of what comprises the medical history and skill in the history-taking process, including time allowance to carry these out.
  • Knowledge of when specific diagnostic tests are indicated according to written protocol.
  • Skill in performing diagnostic tests according to protocol.
  • Skill to read medical instruments, editing data for errors and making necessary corrections of treatment modalities.
  • Skill to operate appropriate medical equipment, e.g., intracranial pressure monitoring devices, central venous pressure monitors, neuroelectrophysiological machines, pulmonary respirators, cardioverter or cardiac defibrillator (capacitor discharge unit), transducer systems, digital read-out equipment and medical computer systems.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
  • Ability to perform various medical procedures.
  • Graduate from a master's degree from a nationally accredited nurse practitioner program.
  • Applicants are expected to meet the legal requirements to practice as a Nurse Practitioner as determined by ; to be
  • DEA License.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS.
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) license.
  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Board certified by the NP National Board Certification.
  • 1-3 years related NP experience
  • Previous Neurosurgery experience or equivalent experience

Preferred:

  • Experience with clinical trials coordination.
