Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking Research Scientist candidates to support an opportunity at the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Physical Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in calibration, validation and operation of spaceborne passive microwave (PMW) sensors, particularly for Space-Based Environmental Monitoring;
  • Experience developing and validating algorithms to estimate geophysical quantities from PMW measurements, quantities of particular interest include Ocean Surface Vector Winds, Sea Ice Concentration and Age, Soil Moisture
  • Experience with some combination of FORTRAN, C, C++, MATLAB, Python, and IDL programming languages
  • Experience with the handling and processing of large data sets.
  • Active Security Clearance required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with antenna beam corrections and with the use of fully-polarimetric PMW data
  • Experience with modeling of ocean surface and radiative transfer of atmosphere at microwave frequencies
  • Experience with radio frequency interference (RFI) detection tests for PMW measurements over ocean and land.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
