Research Intern - Hardware Acceleration

Microsoft
United States, Texas, Austin
Mar 03, 2025
OverviewResearch Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment. At Microsoft, our interns work on real-world projects and collaborate with global teams on cutting-edge technology. Our internship program empowers you to build community, explore your passions, and achieve your goals, all while experiencing a culture rooted in continuous learning, diversity, and innovation. We believe in a growth mindset-encouraging everyone to bring their best ideas to the table as we drive technological excellence. This Research Internship offers an exciting opportunity to work on field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware acceleration solutions that empower Data Analytics. By offloading compute-intensive tasks from traditional CPUs, our FPGA accelerators boost data processing performance in large-scale deployments, delivering faster query times and enhanced customer experiences. As an FPGA Developer Intern, you will contribute to the design and implementation of FPGA accelerators tailored for Data Analytics. You will gain hands-on experience in:Hardware Acceleration for Data Analytics: Developing custom FPGA solutions that enhance performance and scalability.Collaboration: Working closely with experienced architects, hardware engineers, and software developers to tackle challenging technical problems.Innovative Problem Solving: Learning new technologies and methods to push hardware to its limits while ensuring efficient, high-quality designs.
ResponsibilitiesResearch Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world's best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer. Additional ResponsibilitiesDesign and Development: Collaborate with team members to design, develop, and test FPGA accelerators that improve Data Analytics performance.Technical Problem Solving: Apply engineering principles to address complex hardware challenges and innovate practical solutions.Learning and Adaptation: Quickly adopt new tools, methods, and processes to enhance your work and contribute to continuous improvement.Collaboration: Work in a cooperative team environment, engaging with Program Managers and other stakeholders to align technical solutions with customer needs.Testing and Debugging: Assist in debugging FPGA designs, ensuring their reliability and efficiency in large-scale deployments.
