The Data Engineering Manager leads efforts for sourcing, pipelining, storing, and ensuring the trust of data within the organization, supporting the Data & Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategies. This individual manages and prioritizes the entire data enablement backlog, balancing internal team needs with those of various stakeholders. The position oversees a team of data professionals, including data engineers/architects, data management analysts, and other related roles, providing coaching and development opportunities. This role requires owning data products, including but not limited to SAP Business Objects, SAP HANA, Matillion, and Snowflake. Responsibilities include developing roadmaps, allocating resources, managing risks, and staying updated with industry trends.

Your Story.
Operating within the SAFe Agile framework, the Data Engineering Manager collaborates closely with the Data & Analytics Product Owner (PO), scrum master, and other organizational product owners to ensure alignment and achieve Program Increment (PI) objectives. As a core leader for the Data & Analytics program, this role involves managing the data engineering team and fostering strong partnerships with other D&A team leadership, including Data Governance and Analytics and Insights. Additionally, the Data Engineering Manager will:



  • Oversee data engineering efforts to design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to data management systems.
  • Partner with Data Governance to ensure data quality and compliance.
  • Promote best practices supportive of the DLM (Data Lifecycle Management) across the organization.
  • Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making by providing training and support to business users.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve data management processes.

What You Do.

Technical & Architectural Management:



  • Lead team in development and maintaining data models, oversee ETL/ELT processes, and ensure data integrity and quality across enterprise systems.
  • Lead the analysis and scaling of system performance, support system upgrades, and maintain technical documentation for key processes.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of scalable data architectures, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical requirements.
  • Lead the adoption of new data technologies and methodologies, guiding the team through the change process.
  • Partner with Data Governance to develop and enforce data policies to ensure data quality, security, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate data solutions with new and existing systems, enhancing overall data accessibility and usability.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to leadership on resource allocation and technology investments.
  • Support the continuous improvement of data engineering practices by staying updated with industry trends and best practices.


Backlog Management & Program Increment (PI) Planning:



  • Lead and manage data engineering projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives, success criteria, and priorities, while planning work for the next two program increments (PI) and coordinating with intake models to streamline project execution.
  • Own and manage the Data Engineering backlog, balancing conflicting stakeholder demands.
  • Prioritize work within the backlog by considering resource availability, urgency, and strategic importance.
  • Communicate backlog priorities to the agile team and product owner, providing guidance on work breakdown and execution.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director - Data & Analytics and Product Owner to ensure alignment with strategic goals.


Leadership and Mentorship:



  • Provide leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Develop skills and competencies needed by the Data Engineering Team to fulfill business requests.
  • Work closely with the scrum master and product owner to ensure smooth execution, removing blockers, and making decisions on feature scope and priorities.
  • Assist the team in escalating and removing impediments to ensure smooth progress and delivery of project objectives.
  • Participate in daily standups, providing guidance and focus for the team.
  • Advocate for the long-term vision of the Data & Analytics program, working closely with leadership to define roadmap priorities.

Collaboration and Communication:



  • Foster strong partnerships with Executive Sponsors, Scrum Masters, Product Owners (PO), and Enterprise Solution Architects.
  • Act as the primary point of contact between the data engineering team and various stakeholders.
  • Keep stakeholders informed of the team's progress toward PI Objectives through regular updates and clear communication.
  • Engage with Project/Scrum managers, System Demos, Inspect and Adapt Workshops, and other relevant events.
  • Lead the team in capturing and breaking down complex requests, incorporating a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) approach.
  • Utilize tools like JIRA to manage backlog items, track progress, and facilitate smooth team collaboration within the SAFe framework.


Your Education and Experience.



  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of five or more years of IT and business industry work experience of which two or more years include direct experience working with Data Engineering tools; some SAP preferred.
  • Experience managing teams and influencing management and key stakeholders is preferred.
  • Experience in managing resources to meet goals across multiple initiatives is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of IT service management and IT project management principles. Experience in an Agile environment preferred.
  • Agile certification (SAFe certification PO/PM) required, or ability to attain.
