Job Description

The City of Renton is recruiting for Recreation Leader positions
to join our After School STREAM Team program!
As a Recreation Leader I, II or III you will assist the Recreation Coordinator and other City staff with planning, preparing, and implementing theme-based activities for youth ranging in age from 6-17 years old. Activities include field trips, special events, crafts, music, games, STEM instruction and sports. You may at times assist and support employees at the Recreation Leader III level. This position is also responsible for the set-up, take down, security and general cleaning of the facility. The hours and schedule for this position vary and may be from 10-40 hours per week.

Placement at the Recreation Leader I, II or III level, and rate of pay, is dependent on years of experience and qualifications. This position may be located at Highlands Neighborhood Center, Renton Community Center, and North Highlands Neighborhood Center.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide care, safety, and supervision of program participants; attend and supervise children during field trips and events.
  • Assist with preparing activities and events.
  • Implement, lead and/or assist with daily activities in a variety of areas.
  • Report all problems and concerns to Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation management as appropriate.
  • Complete incident reports immediately and communicate any incidents with Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation management as appropriate.
  • Maintain positive relationships and constant communication with Recreation staff, participants and parents.
  • Assist staff in other recreational programs and events as assigned.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings.
  • Be prepared to provide first aid needs as they may occur.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance; work flexible evening hours as needed for open house and information nights.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Recreation Leader I:
  • Minimum 16 years of age.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • Volunteer experience related to recreation preferred.
Recreation Leader II:
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Possess high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of previous work, or volunteer, experience in recreation, teaching or day camp environment required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • May be required to possess a valid Washington State Driver's License and provide a Driver's Abstract that is approved by the Risk Management department if driving a City vehicle.
Recreation Leader III:
  • At least 18 years of age, some positions may require at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess high school diploma or GED.
  • 4 - 8 years of previous work, or volunteer, experience related to the designated or assigned recreation program required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Some positions may require a Driver's Abstract that is approved by the Risk Management department.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following represent the physical demands that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors.
  • Frequent communication with City employees and customers.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Driving a City vehicle may be required.
  • Noise level is moderately loud.
  • Work evenings and/or weekends as assigned.
  • Comply with all COVID-19 practices and procedures in compliance with City, Labor & Industries, and CDC guidelines, such as frequent cleaning and disinfecting of the facilities, wearing appropriate PPE, and other regulations as provided.
