About the Role:We have a unique opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to join Gore Performance Solutions as the Applied Research Leader. The Applied Research Leader is responsible for shaping and executing the overall materials roadmap and applied research strategy for GPS. In this role, you will be expected to maximize the return on investment in our material research and development efforts. You are accountable for the activities of technical teams developing and characterizing materials ahead of new product development and the adoption of these technologies into future products. The scope of material development includes both legacy polymers and new materials. The responsibility of this role includes identifying potential external partnerships for unique technology that aligns with future needs of our businesses. In this critical role you will be responsible for developing a strategic vision for applied research with a multi-year view aligned with our business strategy. You will also be expected to drive continuous improvement in the health of our research portfolio. The applied research leader participates as a member of the GPS technical leadership team to drive decisions aligned with overall GPS strategy.

This position will be located at our facility in Elkton, Maryland, with the possibility of a hybrid remote work arrangement, depending upon the responsibilities of the role and business needs. Relocation assistance may be offered for this role.

Pay and Benefits:



  • $150,000 - $215,000 per year
  • Roles above $150k are eligible for the variable pay program each fiscal year, based on defined business performance metrics.

Responsibilities:



  • Define and drive the GPS Applied Research Strategy with input from applied research platforms, BUs and GPS Explore team
  • Provide direct leadership to leaders of our material characterization and development teams
  • Manage and improve the GPS research portfolio, as measured by portfolio health metrics, using objective, outcome focused techniques and holding teams accountable to their commitments
  • Effectively manage support for high priority work by deploying associates across GPS to support NPD, Exploration and Engineering
  • Ensure research spending of Applied Research is within forecast
  • Collaborate on the identification, assessment and acquisition of external technologies
  • Develop an effective IP strategy balancing risk and speed
  • Drive functional excellence and development of scientists
  • Partner with stakeholders to provide input to Gore Incubator

Required Qualifications:



  • Degree in Science or Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of industrial experience driving material or product development programs (vision, strategy, execution, financials)
  • Minimum of 5 years with a demonstrated track record of effective, formal technical leadership with proven success in influencing, integrating, and resolving conflicts across functions, businesses, and operating companies
  • Experience formally leading a team that resulted in adoption of new technology in a product launch
  • Excellent teaching and application of the scientific method to drive results-oriented advancements in technology, including the coaching of leaders to drive functional excellence within their teams
  • Ability to quickly review opportunities to identify gaps in technology and coach leaders and their teams to rapidly drive discovery of evidence to further invest or stop
  • Demonstrated ability to generate and translate strategy into priorities/goals, drive performance and engagement through coaching and feedback, measures outcomes and hold others accountable for results
  • Ability to lead through change and ambiguity
  • Ability to travel up to 20%



Desired Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree in science, engineering and/or business
  • Experience developing broadly leveraged new materials
  • Successful experience leading and developing associates in global environments and skilled at developing concise work proposals and effective communication with leadership
