The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department currently has four (4) openings for Senior Professional Engineers across the following Public Works divisions:
- Transportation Engineering & Design (3 openings)
- Transportation Maintenance & Repair (1 opening)
The Senior Professional Engineers will perform a variety of high-level professional engineering tasks in coordinating major tasks for the Public Work's Department. Job Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation Engineering and Design Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee the delivery of multimodal capital projects in TED ensuring the timely delivery of project documents for construction.
- Provide professional engineering expertise in areas of Design, Stormwater Management, Survey and oversee the preparation of detailed plans and specifications for construction projects.
- Manage all aspects of projects/programs, including scope, schedule, budget, rationale, allocation of resources, design, cost management and reporting.
- Develop and maintain operational and project budgets.
- Develop and oversee project estimates as a part of the annual capital budget request process.
- Coordinate work with other City divisions/departments, other agencies, private utilities, and private contractors.
- Manage, direct and supervise Professional Engineers, project managers, engineers in training and technicians.
- Address project concerns generated by the public, participate in neighborhood meetings, and make presentations to City Council.
- Perform high level professional engineering and administrative duties as assigned.
Work Location: Public Service Building, 505 4th Ave S Suite 261, Minneapolis, MN 55415 Working Conditions: This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office. - Perform research and analysis of structures pavement, and equipment and makes recommendations for repair and/or replacement.
- Provide professional engineering expertise to street construction projects and/or repair efforts.
- Manage all aspects of capital projects, including budget and funding, scope, rationale, allocation of resources, cost management, and reporting.
- Manage capital projects/programs within the Public Works Department, preparing and administering a budget, project selection, financing for a 5-year program and supervising staff assigned to the unit.
- Oversee the preparation of detailed plans, specifications, and bidding documents for street construction projects.
- Monitor job costs and may adjust project scope/work to meet budget requirements.
- Take responsibility for staffing, supervising, and training staff engaged in street construction and repair work.
- Coordinate as the division engineer in construction, maintenance, inspection, permitting, and other work with other divisions of the Public Works Department, private utilities and outside agencies.
- May take lead role in public relations effort regarding some activities occurring in the Public Work's Department.
- Perform related high level professional engineering and administrative duties as assigned.
- Remote work is not available for this position.
Work Location: Hiawatha Maintenance Facility, 1901 E 26th St, Minneapolis, MN 55404 Working Conditions: This position currently works on-site only. Additional Working Conditions for both roles: Office and field setting. Field work may include exposure to all weather conditions, exposure to outdoor elements such a noise, dust, gases, fumes and chemicals; exposure to high traffic areas and other types of conditions that may be found in a construction environment. Nonstandard work hours and evening public meetings may be occasionally required.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering program. Minimum Experience Five years' experience performing engineering work, including one year experience as a Registered Professional Engineer. Licenses/Certifications Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota or ability to be registered in the State of Minnesota within 6 months of hire. Selection Process The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience 100%. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score 70% on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Background Check The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Union Representation This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Professional Engineers (Public Works) unit. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. The eligible list will expire upon hire after it has been established. Interview Selection The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

Transportation Engineering and Design Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- It is desirable that the candidate have experience managing and overseeing the work of other engineers and paraprofessional staff.
- It is desirable that the candidate have experience with managing municipal capital projects including experience with County/State/and Federal projects.
- It is desirable that the candidate knowledge of permanent and temporary stormwater controls on municipal projects with a focus on rate control, infiltration, and water quality.
- It is desirable the candidate have computer aided drafting experience with Microstation and Open Roads or equivalent.
Transportation Maintenance and Repair Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- It is desirable that the candidate have experience managing and overseeing the work of other engineers and paraprofessional staff.
- It is desirable that the candidate have experience with managing municipal capital projects including experience with County/State/and Federal projects.
- It is desirable that the candidate have experience contracting, managing, and documenting work by private contractors working on street construction projects. This includes following all guidelines and policies for funding reimbursements for these projects.
- It is desirable that the candidate have experience collaborating with internal and external divisions, agencies, and utilities for the successful delivery of complex public infrastructure projects.
