Summary:

This position is for a full-time Horticulture Technician, who is primarily responsible for the care of newly planted trees and shrubs throughout the Arboretum. Care includes but is not limited to installing, pruning, watering, weeding, edging, mulching, installing and maintaining deer protection, monitoring and managing for pests and diseases, and assessing and recording status. They will also be responsible for inventorying and maintaining all equipment used in the maintenance work. They may also perform a wide range of horticultural duties and garden-maintenance tasks, and work with students, volunteers, and interns on garden projects and activities in the Ambler Arboretum, as time permits.

The Horticulture Technician will report to and work with the Gardens Manager on prioritizing the daily horticultural duties required to maintain a botanical garden and active living/learning laboratory.

This hands-on horticultural position requires working in the gardens cooperatively and alongside other Arboretum staff, volunteers, and student gardeners. There is regular collegial interface with University Facilities and Grounds staff.

Familiarity with botany, biology, plant morphology and physiology, plant nomenclature as well as pest, disease and weed identification and integrated pest management is essential. The Horticultural Technician must be able to learn and apply the principals of Integrated Pest Management including regular scouting for pest, disease and weed problems.

This position frequently requires the expenditure of physical labor and the use of motorized equipment and other tools.

The Horticulture Technician is a full-time position with funding that will end May 2026 with the possibility of an extension.

Required Education and Experience:

* High School Diploma, GED, or AS or BS in relevant subject; Practical Horticulture courses; 2 years of relevant practical experience will be accepted in lieu of a formal degree

* Two years' experience in public horticulture, park or estate maintenance or landscape maintenance.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

* Must have a valid driver's license

* Must have PA pesticide applicator's license or ability to obtain this license.

* Experience working with volunteers is preferred.
