We are seeking a qualifiedEngineer, Computer II position in the Virginia Beach, VA, Austin, TX, or San Diego, CA areas. Other geographic locations are possible.

Position Description:

The Engineer, Computer II supports the technical and training leads who are providing training to U.S. Navy Sailors on the Tactical Tomahawk Weapon Control System which is a vital weapon contributing to our nation's defense. This effort supports the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) which is part of the larger Naval Sea Systems Command. The NSWC PHD mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, and in-service engineering and logistics support to the United States Navy (USN), other military services, and government agencies. Its focus areas include combat systems, unmanned systems, surface ship systems, and information system.

Work location and telework: Work location is Virginia Beach, VA, Austin, TX, or San Diego, CA areas. Other geographic locations are possible. Work from home may be possible when not required to be onsite or on travel.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work with a team to deliver software upgrades for a navy system.
  • Computer hardware and software engineers' research, design, develop, and test computer hardware and software programs. Hardware refers to computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, and related equipment such as keyboards, modems, and printers.
  • Computer software engineers develop the software systems that control computers. Computer hardware engineers work exclusively with computers and computer-related equipment.
  • In addition to design and development duties, computer hardware engineers supervise the manufacturing and installation of computers and computer-related equipment.
  • Computer software engineers develop new computer software systems and to incorporate new technologies in a rapidly growing range of applications.
  • Computer software engineers apply the principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis to the design, development, testing, and evaluation of the software and systems that enable computers to perform their many applications.
  • Software engineers analyze users' needs and design, construct, test, and maintain computer applications software or systems. Computer software engineers can be involved in the design and development of many types of software, including software for operating systems and network distribution, and compilers, which convert programs for execution on a computer. They also solve technical problems that arise.
  • Software engineers must possess strong programming skills, but are more concerned with developing algorithms and analyzing and solving programming problems than with actually writing code. The programming languages most often used are C, C++, and Java, with Fortran and COBOL used less commonly.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Education: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable discipline such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Physics or Mathematics.

Experience:

  • Seven (7) years of experience in the development of software supporting integrated applications for real-time computer systems and Combat Weapon System computer programs.
  • Five (5) years of experience applying quality assurance inspections to software products. This experience may run concurrently with all other required experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience in the development of software to support Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals. This experience may run concurrently with all other required experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience with browser based scripting languages such as JavaScript. This experience may run concurrently with all other required experience.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience programming using C++ and Java computer languages.
  • Demonstrated experience using LINUX operating systems and commands.
  • Demonstrated experience using Integrated Development Environments (IDE) to develop and test software code.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, programming, and administering relational database systems.
  • Demonstrated experience using Military Standard Software Development and Documentation (MIL-STD-498).
  • Demonstrated experience developing Graphical User Interface (GUI) systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with Learning Management Systems.
  • Direct experience with Tomahawk Weapons Control System software development.
  • Direct experience with Navy Combat Weapon System computer programs.

Travel Requirements:

  • Limited travel to the continental United States (primarily east and west coasts)
  • Limited / Occasional overseas travel
  • Some travel may be for 2-3 weeks a few times a year
