Job Summary The Police Captain reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Police and oversees the day-to-day patrol functions of the Drexel University Police Department. Working with the Deputy Chief of Police provides a high level of professional police services to the Drexel and the West Philadelphia community. Essential Functions
- Responsible for the daily operations, performance, efficiency, effectiveness, staffing and accountability of Drexel University Police Department personnel, patrol units and the direct supervision of Shift commanders/patrol supervisors.
- Adheres to the highest ethical and professional standards in the enforcement of Federal, State, City laws/ordinances and University regulations through patrol, investigations and the apprehension and prosecution of violators.
- Using Community Policing concepts ensures police coverage is visible and effectively and pro-actively addressing patterns of crime, and other quality of life issues, using the Drexel mapping process and all available analysis tools.
- Identifies, recommends, and provides continual training, education and professional development to all patrol personnel including the Bicycle Unit and other special service functions.
- Responsible for the continual development and implementation of the department's Community Relations Programs. Ensures timely reporting to the Deputy Chief of Police on all relevant issues affecting the relationship of the Department of Public Safety and the Drexel and West Philadelphia Community.
- Oversees discipline and grievance issues for Drexel Police officers and supervisors.
- Oversees the Complaints against Police process and collaborates with the Deputy Chief of Police on producing an annual report.
- Responsibilities for the overall command and the Traffic Management Function, and all auxiliary state and federal grant/operational programs associated with vehicular, pedestrian, and bicyclist safety.
- Ensures that all reports are complete, professional, accurate, timely and in compliance with departmental and CALEA standards.
- Responsible for the successful staffing, command oversight and operational implementation for all Special Events affecting the University.
- Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel with normal span of control over lieutenants, Sergeants, officers, and civilian personnel.
- Charged with bringing new and innovative programming that involves the Drexel Community and provides timely updates to the Deputy Chief of Police.
- Supports CALEA Accreditation through close collaboration with the Police and Communications CALEA Accreditation Managers.
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Fire, Life & Safety and Assistant Director for Emergency Preparedness on all emergency drills and tabletop exercises.
- Performs other duties as directed by the Deputy Chief of Police.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of HS Diploma or GED in or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.

- A minimum of 5-7 years demonstrated command/supervisory experience.
- Must be MPOETC Act 120 Certified.

Additional Information This position is classified as Exempt, grade O. Compensation for this grade ranges from $108,330.00 to $162,490.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
