Business Development Section Head for Civil & Commercial Space Mission

The Space Dynamic Laboratory (SDL) Civil and Commercial Space (CVS) Division is seeking applicants for the position of Civil Space Business Development Section Head to support the Division leadership team in the following civil and commercial space market areas:

  • Civil space science & infrastructure
  • Small spacecraft
  • Space mission systems
  • Remote sensing
  • Instrument systems & calibration
The Business Development Section Head will be responsible for the following duties under the Mission Formulation Branch Head:
  • Presents and explains the SDL's civil and commercial space division expertise and capabilities to current and prospective customers, mission partners, and government representatives
  • Identifies civil and commercial space market opportunities with commercial companies, universities, national labs, NASA, NOAA, NSF, and other civil governmental agencies (travel, interface directly with customers, support Formulation BH)
  • Leads efforts to develop and maintain civil and commercial space market expertise
    • Manages strategic relationships with customers, mission partners, principal investigators, scientists, government representatives, and commercial companies
    • Attends technical and industry conferences and town hall meetings
    • Reviews government budget requests, press releases, subcommittee meetings, and community announcements
  • Collaborates on the development and implementation of CVS Division strategy
    • Participate in developing strategic plans and roadmaps for future spacecraft, science, sensing, and calibration technologies relating to the civil space market
    • Assesses market opportunities and creates win themes by understanding civil and commercial space technology applications, budgets, customer needs, and schedule factors
    • Provides technical vision and leadership to promote the development of innovative, high-value products and services within the Division
    • Supports leadership initiatives and associated change management
  • Leads proposal support staff assigned to support CVS proposals and Formulation efforts
  • Provides new project development leadership to ensure offerings meet customer requirements
    • Ensures customer satisfaction on programs and proposals to create opportunities for future business

An allocation of 50% full-time equivalent is anticipated for Section Head duties. The remaining 50% may be allocated to technical or program management tasks on individual projects, depending on relevant experience.

General Requirements:
  • BS Degree (master's degree or PhD preferred)
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience with a highly technical organization performing the following tasks:
    • Scientific research
    • Design and development of space hardware/software applications
    • Program management and/or systems engineering
    • New project development
    • Proposal preparation
    • Managing customer relations
    • Contract management
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be able obtain a U.S. Government security clearance
  • Must be able to travel
  • Must possess the ability to lead a team while making direct contributions to team success
  • Proactive and self-motivated
  • Skilled in verbal and written communications; ability to prepare and present to both technical and administrative groups in an oral presentation format
Desired skills/experience:
  • Active U.S. Government security clearance
  • Relevant experience with the civil and commercial space customers (i.e., NASA, NOAA, multiple commercial space companies, etc.)
  • Experience with space industry service and IDIQ contracts
  • Experience with large-scale NASA science mission proposals
Salary Range:
  • $134,000-$193,000
    • Salary commensurate upon highest education level and years of directly related experience
