Job Overview

We are currently looking for a Sewer to join our team in Bruce.

Performs and has primary responsibility for operations of single and double needle, top stitch, boarder, and serger machines, including, but not limited to, complex set up, adjustments, and operation of various sewing machines. Ability to produce quality (as defined by Haworth quality standards) complex parts per blueprints, product orders, and engineering specifications, within tolerance. Performs necessary quality checks, practices machine preventive maintenance, and performs general utility work to meet work schedule.

Major Responsibilities

  • Performs duties to ensure department and plant meet daily and weekly work load requirements.
  • Performs complex set-up (completed in approximately 30 minutes), adjustments and operation of various equipment, including, but not limited to, single- and double-needle sewing machines, per production orders and engineering specifications, to produce quality parts/materials of complex nature. Shares knowledge and expertise with others.
  • Performs first piece inspections and additional quality checks per inspection instructions, utilizing precision measuring instruments, such as calipers and micrometers, ensuring Haworth quality specifications are met. May repair flaws in product.
  • Performs daily preventive maintenance as required; makes adjustments as necessary and records maintenance information in log. Assists Maintenance with troubleshooting equipment problems and malfunction diagnostics to minimize machine downtime.
  • Utilizes various manufacturing systems, via personal computer (PC) and keyboard/mouse.
  • Monitors material usage and floor-stock to ensure inventory accuracy; reports discrepancies to appropriate parties.
  • Verifies accuracy of production orders and Bills of Material (BOMs) to inform appropriate parties of any BOM inaccuracies.
  • Tracks and records statistical process control (SPC) data into log as required, ensuring components meet quality standards.
  • Follows all safety requirements and communicates any safety concerns.
  • Maintains safety and cleanliness of work area by performing various housekeeping duties, including work center preventive maintenance.
  • Frequently loads, unloads, pulls, and/or positions materials/parts, weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally more (assistance given with heavier objects by work partner[s]), requiring bending, lifting, reaching, pulling, pushing, and/or twisting.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork.
  • Performs all duties as assigned to ensure department and plant meet daily and weekly production requirements.
  • Flexes work schedule as business demands; may work more than eight hours per day and/or forty hours per week, including weekends and/or holidays.

EDUCATION



  • High school graduate or equivalent (equivalent is defined as equivalent degree OR job-specific work experience OR combination of education and job-specific work experience; three years job-specific work experience equals one year of formal education).
  • Up to twelve months' on-the-job training required.



WORK REQUIREMENTS and EXPERIENCE



  • Four years experience with operating industrial sewing machines.



ENVIRONMENTAL and PHYSICAL DEMANDS



  • Frequent exposure to dust, noise, solvent, heat, paint, and lubricants.
  • Large machinery and equipment used in work area.
  • Eye protection required; hearing protection may be required.
  • Lifts material/product weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally more, and/or moves material/product weighing various amounts (assistance given with heavier objects).
  • Walks, bends, twists, turns, and lifts while performing functions of position.
  • Constant mental and visual alertness required to avoid potential serious injury to self and others in work group.

Ideally, you have also demonstrated the following:

  • Ability to utilize precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to sew fabrics, vinyl, and leather for upholstered furniture.
  • PC and keyboard/mouse skills required.
  • Ability to work as contributing member within team environment.
  • Ability to frequently lift/move material weighing up to 50 pounds.
