Therapeutic Rec Instructor Summer 2025

Seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual to work hands on with individuals with disabilities in an enrichment based recreational setting. Develop daily/weekly lesson plans for assigned activity. Facilitate the activity in an engaging manor, while providing needed adaptations according to ability levels of participants. Programming takes place at various locations throughout the city of Milwaukee.

• Respect all participants.
• Be punctual for work.
• Learn participant's names and abilities. Be aware of their needs (medication, allergies, etc.)
• Assist and encourage participants in each activity. Do not do the activity for them.
• Attend all requested meetings and trainings.
• Offer direction to participants and staff.
• Plan appropriate activities to fill the designated amount of time. Have back-up plans as needed.
• Clearly state directions and set up class rules/expectations.
• Be prepared - have lesson plans filled out and supplies ready for the activity.
• Provide a supply list to director for upcoming projects in a timely manner.
• Use appropriate discipline when needed. No physical punishment.
• Assist participants with toileting and feeding as needed.
• Be enthusiastic about your job.
• Serve as a role model for participants and staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of Therapeutic Recreation.

• Be punctual for work and meet scheduled needs of position including dress code.
• Ability to foster positive relationships through patience and respect.
• Effectively communicate with all members of the community, coworkers, and supervisory staff.
• Excellent decision making/ problem solving skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to participate interactively and effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
• Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual
• Enforce and adhere to all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
• Maintain a safe, organized, inviting, family friendly environment.
• Attend/complete all requested meetings and trainings.
• Be intentional in your actions and demonstrate professionalism at all times while on the job while being enthusiastic about your job.
• Accurately complete administrative duties in a timely and accurate manner.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Desire to work with individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to plan and lead lessons, in addition to modifying activities to all ability levels.
• Fluency in Spanish is desired, however not required.

Contributes as a team member to recreational activities designed to engage individuals of all ability levels.
