Position description

Director of Clinical Education (DCE)

The UCSF Department Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to serve as the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) for our Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. This key faculty role oversees the clinical education component of the curriculum, ensuring students receive high-quality learning experiences that integrate didactic and clinical knowledge to prepare them for professional practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Education Program Development and Management



  • Lead the development, implementation, and refinement of the clinical education curriculum.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with clinical education sites and clinical faculty.
  • Ensure clinical education experiences align with program goals and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborate with program directors in the assessment and development of the DPT program.


Student and Faculty Support



  • Collaborate with faculty to evaluate student performance in clinical settings.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to students during clinical placements.
  • Educate students, clinical faculty, and academic faculty about clinical education processes and expectations.
  • Attendance in departmental and university events.


Communication and Liaison Role



  • Serve as the primary liaison between the program and clinical education sites.
  • Facilitate communication about policies, curriculum, and clinical education expectations with all stakeholders.


Teaching and Clinical Care



  • Teach and assist in teaching core curriculum courses.
  • Possible opportunities to provide clinical care in our Outpatient or Inpatient settings.


Curriculum Design and Assessment



  • Contribute to curriculum design, review, and revision using data from clinical education outcomes and trends in healthcare delivery.
  • Collect and analyze feedback from students, clinical sites, and faculty to assess and improve clinical education components.


Compliance and Accreditation



  • Ensure the clinical education program meets CAPTE accreditation standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive records, including clinical site agreements, student performance data, and program evaluations.


Professional Development and Engagement



  • Participate in regional, state, and national clinical education forums and professional development opportunities.
  • Stay current with trends and best practices in clinical education.


Qualifications



  • Licensed Physical Therapist or eligible for California Physical Therapist License with a doctoral degree (DPT) from an accredited program or an equivalent degree, by the time of hire.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical practice, including experience as a clinical instructor, site coordinator of clinical education, or academic teaching in clinical education, by the time of hire.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education and the Physical Therapy Profession.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience as a Director of Clinical Education or in a similar role.
  • 2 years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and administration in a physical therapy education program.
  • Involvement in clinical education consortia or professional organizations.
  • Evidence of scholarship.

The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science is to provide evidence-based, patient- centered physical therapy services for the community, and to educate scholarly, socially sensitive clinicians, educators, and researchers in physical therapy and rehabilitation science who will lead the profession into the next century. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $108,900 - $169,400. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
