Job Description

We are seeking an experienced COBOL to PostgreSQL Migration Specialist to lead and execute the transition of a COBOL-based application to a PostgreSQL environment. This role requires expertise in COBOL programming, database migration, and SQL transformation, ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining data integrity and system performance.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze COBOL Code. Review and understand existing COBOL programs, including embedded SQL statements and data structures.
  • Develop an equivalent PostgreSQL schema that accurately represents the COBOL data structures.
  • Map COBOL data types (e.g., PIC 9(5)) to appropriate PostgreSQL types (e.g., INTEGER, NUMERIC) while considering precision and scale.
  • Rewrite COBOL-embedded SQL statements to conform with PostgreSQL syntax for SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operations.
  • Convert intricate COBOL data structures like REDEFINES and nested records into PostgreSQL tables or use JSON types where appropriate.
  • Implement best practices for query optimization and indexing in PostgreSQL.
  • Conduct thorough testing to ensure data accuracy and system functionality after conversion.
  • Leverage COBOL modernization tools and database migration utilities to streamline the transition process.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, and document the entire migration process.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in COBOL development and database migrations.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL database architecture, SQL scripting, and performance tuning.
  • Strong understanding of COBOL data structures, REDEFINES, and file handling mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in SQL conversion from COBOL-embedded SQL to PostgreSQL.
  • Experience using database migration tools and COBOL modernization frameworks.
  • Knowledge of data integrity principles and relational database normalization.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong communication, presentation, analytical, and technical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to clear a federal background investigation - Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Must be a US Citizen or have a Green Card.
  • Workdays: Monday-Friday.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in government or federal healthcare projects.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL JSON data types for handling complex structures.
  • Knowledge of middleware tools for facilitating COBOL to PostgreSQL integration.
  • Prior experience in performance optimization of legacy application migrations.
