Job Summary

The Chief of Staff serves as a partner to the Chair of the Department and Chief Administrative Office (CAO) to support the clinical, administrative, philanthropic, academic and research functions of the Department. The Chief of Staff serves as key project manager to the Department Chair and CAO and represents them internally and externally, leading the execution and communication of strategic priorities. He/she oversees high level clinical and research intiativies on behalf of the Chair and CAO. The Chief of Staff works closely with all members of the department units, including department Vice-Chairs, Faculty Leaders, and department Directors to facilitate efforts to effectively manage the operations of the department.

The Chief of Staff must be able to thrive and succeed in an executive level in a complex organizational environment. The candidate will work direclty with the Chair and CAO to drive high-level strategic initiatives by managing various projects with different department units for the Chair's initiatives.

He/she will plan and execute high level decisions with political sensitivity and independently resolving complex policy and program issues. Must demonstrate executive level project management ability to gain concensus amongst all levels of staff and faculty constituients in order to delegate and coordinate executive project outcomes and meet the executive office stringent deadlines. The candidate will anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance various priorities. Maturity, judgment, analytical talent and leadership are essential to success in this role.

The Chief of Staff partners with other departments across the School of Medicine in order to collaborate on Radiology strategic partnerships and projects. Provides policy advice to the Chair and executive level staff and academic leadership.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $102,400 - $156,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine. The Department of Radiology provides service for UCSF's six integrated facilities: Moffitt/Long Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Mt. Zion Hospital, China Basin, and the Mission Bay Hospital. The department has 32 sections and research units, and has over 200 salaried faculty and non-faculty academics. The Department also has over 200 staff members.

Because of the large size of the department and the high volume of transactions, with over $65 million annual clinical budget and over $50 millon in academic research activities, the chief of staff role will be key to ensure completion of the Chair's project and inititaives in an efficient manner.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • At least 3 years of experience working in an academic environment with both Faculty and Researchers
  • Excellent computer skills including the design, development and implementation of new databases, and word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of Advance, MyReports, AP Recruit, PeopleConnect; SmartSheet; Bearbuy, MyExpense, Qualtrics, and/or equivalent processing systems.
  • Demonstrated experience providing expert consultation and guidance to executive management pertaining to policy and organizational structure (ex. experience in providing expert advice to the Department Chair/Vice-Chair and/or Executive Leadership team)
  • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of staff and members of the community.
  • Advanced analytical / problem-solving skills. Proven ability of analytical and critical thinking skills to conduct analyses and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Strong ability to focus on priorities, strategies, and vision
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Strong ability to coach, faciliate, and influence people at all levels.
  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with others, both verbally and in writing
