urec.uark.edu Summary of Job Duties:The Assistant Director directly oversees the management of theHPER Building, including the UREC Natatorium, and departmental risk management and safety. Staff responsibilities include one full-time staff member, and directly and indirectly supervise approximately 60+ student staff members in part-time positions. This position also includes reservation management for the UREC Natatorium. Additional responsibilities include the creation, enforcement, and execution of facility and aquatic policies and procedures, programming, maintenance, risk management, and Red Cross administration.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the overall management of the HPER Building, including the UREC Natatorium, and oversees departmental risk management and safety protocols. This position supervises one full-time staff member and directly or indirectly manages over 60 part-time student staff members. Additional duties include managing reservations for the UREC Natatorium, as well as developing, implementing, and enforcing facility and aquatic policies and procedures. The role oversees programming, facility maintenance, risk management, and the administration of Red Cross certifications and standards.

Responsibilities:
Facility Operations: Direct the financial, operating, and personnel procedures for the HPER Building, including the UREC Natatorium. Develop, directly supervise, and evaluate over 30 student staff in part-time positions. Duties include the development and management of budgets, operating policies, and scheduling protocols, long range planning, compliance with maintenance and preventative maintenance guidelines, and capital equipment purchases. This position will manage pool chemistry and operational systems. Develop policies and procedures for the fitness centers spaces within the HPER Building. Oversee and monitor all annual expenses for the Recreation Facility and Pool Operations budgets including payroll, expenditures, and maintenance.

Risk Management: Direct a comprehensive risk management program for the department including the administration of all Red Cross programming and Authorized Provider status regarding CPR, First Aid, AED, and Lifeguarding. Additionally, this position will manage the participation records for activity, semester, and annual reporting. This position will also ensure compliance with health, safety, and operational codes and standards.

Administration: Develop, supervise, and evaluate the Coordinator of Facilities and Risk Management. Create and implement short- and long-term goals in risk management, learning outcomes, strategic planning, objectives and key results, and other departmental initiatives. Assess program and curriculum, adhere to state, city, and NIRSA guidelines, and maintain departmental compliance.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation and Sports Management, Higher Education, Parks and Recreation, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education

  • At least two years of facility or aquatic management experience

  • Experience managing part-time employees

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Recreation, and Sports Management, or a related field

  • Experience in the campus recreation setting

  • Certified Scuba Diver

  • Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, or Lifeguard Instructor Trainer

  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of facility operations

  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards related to pools and facilities

  • Knowledge of aquatic programming

  • Knowledge of risk management procedures

  • Ability to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

  • Ability to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification

  • Ability to obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification

  • Ability to articulate a foundational understanding of social justice and inclusion within the context of higher education

  • Ability to create environments that foster equitable participation of all groups while seeking to address and acknowledge issues of oppression, privilege, and power

  • Has a sense of their own agency and social responsibility that includes others, their community, and the larger global context
