ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

UC San Diego is hiring hiring temporary Security Guards to support security needs for grounds and building inhabitants on site in Pt Loma.

Duration: 6 Months

Compensation: $20.50/hour plus eligible for Medical Benefits, Vacation, Sick, and Holiday pay.

Work Schedule: MUST be willing to work 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. (2-3 days a week).

Location: 100% on-site in Pt Loma

DESCRIPTION

The MarFac Security Guard provides continuous foot patrol of the Nimitz Marine Facility, Marine Physical Laboratory, and research vessels, including ship's compartments, buildings, grounds, stairwells, walkways, quays, public, and staff areas.

Prepares and submits detailed written daily activity log and incident reports in paper and electronic formats. Checks doors and secures all zones at closing. Checks for facility maintenance problems and unlawful acts or infractions of Facility and/or University policies; reports problems immediately to the supervisor, Port Captain, or other Manager. Handles emergency situations and building evacuations, as established by policy and procedure. Provides a high degree of public contact and community service, such as public information, giving directions and assistance, providing escorts and general crime prevention. Works closely with campus, military, and harbor police in handling security incidents and incident follow-up tasks.

FUNCTIONS

Security Measures Performed for Access Control to Nimitz Marine Facility Property and Controlled Water Front

  • Stops and examines at the waterfront gate all persons and vehicles desiring to enter controlled areas. Grants access only to personnel with a valid reason for being there.
  • Searches vehicles and personal belongings of persons entering the waterfront areas, in accordance with MARSEC directives and Facility Security Plan (FSP).
  • Maintains official logs using established forms. Primary logs include: personnel, vehicles, and shift log (blotter).
  • Challenges all personnel for positive identification prior to allowing them on the waterfront; positive identification may include picture ID issued by a competent authority, including TWIC, state-issued driver license, military ID, seafarer's union card, UCSD ID card, and government-issued passport. Prevents access to persons unable to show positive ID. Notifies the Facility Security Officer (FSO) if a person attempts to gain access to the Facility using false or inappropriate identification.

Vessel Security

  • Ensures ships' mooring lines are properly tensioned and adequate in number; adjusts and moves lines as necessary.
  • Checks machinery spaces, bilges, and refrigeration/freezer units for proper operations, temperatures, and pressures.
  • Determines possible detrimental effects of weather and tides.
  • Removes/replaces gangways and operates forklift.
  • Assists connection/disconnection of ship's telephone, water, and sewage (as directed by vessel personnel).

Report writing and maintenance of security records

  • Writes reports in the daily log and on email to inform departmental administrators and managers of any unusual situations and/or security incidents that occurred on shift.
  • Prepares and submits incident, witness, and discrepancy reports and helps prepare quarterly security bulletin, signage, and develops information handouts on safety and security.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to learn understand and follow policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of security for the MarFac grounds and people in the buildings.
  • Ability to exercise proper discretion and confidentiality when dealing with law enforcement information, information about individuals, and other information obtained in the line of duty.
  • Ability to handle a high degree of public contact responsibly and effectively.Proven ability to communicate effectively and operate portable telephones, radios, and other communication devices appropriately and professionally.
  • Ability to remain calm, take appropriate action, and maintain a professional and impartial stance in all safety, security, emergency, and/or disaster situations as encountered.
  • Demonstrated ability to use personal computers, printers, and word-processing and database software in a networked environment.
  • Ability to record in writing information obtained during interviews and investigations.
  • Knowledge of correct techniques to screen calls, provide messages, and track responses, both verbal and written.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Background check required.
  • MUST be willing to work 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.(2-3 days a week)
  • Must be able to adjust work schedule for extended hours, weekends, and holiday coverage.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the TSA.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,099 - $58,151 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.12 - $27.85

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
